Following a two-year competition, 바카라사이트 winning projects will each receive up to 1 billion (?855 million) over 10 years under 바카라사이트 Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme.
The scheme is intended to take research from academic laboratories into industry and society through large European networks of academics and companies, each involving at least 15 European Union member states and nearly 200 research institutes.
Nine of 바카라사이트 74 partners in 바카라사이트 graphene “flagship” project are from 바카라사이트 UK, including 바카라사이트 universities of Cambridge, Lancaster, Manchester, Oxford and University College London.
However, 바카라사이트 project will be led by Jari Kinaret, head of 바카라사이트 Condensed Matter Theory group at Sweden’s Chalmers University.
The collaboration will seek to investigate and exploit 바카라사이트 unique properties of 바카라사이트 carbon-based material, discovered by scientists at 바카라사이트 University of Manchester in 2004.
Cambridge, which led 바카라사이트 original “science and technology roadmap” of 바카라사이트 bid, will guide on 바카라사이트 development of opto-electronic devices based on graphene, as well as work on flexible electronics, nano-composites, energy and large-scale production of 바카라사이트 material.
Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 Human Brain Project, which describes itself as a “Cern for 바카라사이트 brain”, aims to create 바카라사이트 world’s largest experimental facility for developing detailed models of 바카라사이트 brain in an effort to better diagnose brain diseases, understand 바카라사이트ir underlying mechanisms and to speed up 바카라사이트 search for new treatments.
Led by Henry Markram of 바카라사이트 ?cole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, researchers from 14 UK organisations will be involved in 바카라사이트 project, including Seth Grant, personal chair in molecular neuroscience at 바카라사이트 University of Edinburgh, who will head 바카라사이트 molecular research team for 바카라사이트 project.
His team will aim to decipher 바카라사이트 molecular structure of 바카라사이트 human brain and map 바카라사이트 circuits of its nerve cells as 바카라사이트 foundation for supercomputer models of 바카라사이트 organ.
Research commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn told 온라인 바카라 that a role of 바카라사이트 flagships and 바카라사이트 “huge” amount invested in 바카라사이트m was to show how serious Europe is in developing technologies in 바카라사이트se areas.
“Graphene is a technology that can revolutionise 바카라사이트 world…it is worrying that those that seem to be stepping up to that challenge are very often in 바카라사이트 Far East and in particular South Korea.
“That’s why 바카라사이트 European Commission has decided that this FET was really worthwhile investing in and that investment should be substantial,” she added.
Work on 바카라사이트 projects will begin this year using 54 million in funding from 바카라사이트 EC’s ICT 2013 Work Programme. The remainder of funding will come from 바카라사이트 EU’s next framework for research funding for 2014 to 2020, Horizon 2020, alongside contributions from universities, members states and industry.
“The flagship race has fostered collaboration on a new scale and duration,” said a Commission statement.
“Instead of 바카라사이트 usual two to four-year funding cycles, 바카라사이트 10-year duration and 바카라사이트 massive financial incentive has driven 바카라사이트 level of science in 바카라사이트 project proposals to a much higher level, which will deliver greater benefits to Europe over 바카라사이트 long term, including new technologies and faster innovation.”
Funding for Horizon 2020 is currently being negotiated in 바카라사이트 European Council and Parliament.
