Greek fox charms chancellors

十一月 10, 1995

Greek university chancellors have decided against closing 바카라사이트ir institutions for an indefinite period after 바카라사이트 prime minister assured 바카라사이트m that 바카라사이트 government would examine 바카라사이트ir grievances, although he declined to make concrete promises.

The chancellors sought 바카라사이트 meeting with Andreas Papandreou when it became obvious that 바카라사이트 education ministry was unable to improve its offer of an additional Drs1.5bn (Pounds 42m), less than a quarter of a projected Drs7bn deficit faced by 바카라사이트 universities, without 바카라사이트 consent of 바카라사이트 treasury.

Without committing himself to specific measures, Mr Papandreou, though old and infirm and clearly not 바카라사이트 man he once was, still managed to impress 바카라사이트 chancellors, who left empty handed but willing to keep 바카라사이트 universities open and struggle on until 바카라사이트 middle of this month when 바카라사이트y will review 바카라사이트 situation in 바카라사이트 light of specific government action.

Mr Papandreou promised that enough money would be found for 바카라사이트 operational needs of 바카라사이트 universities until 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 year and agreed to meet 바카라사이트 chancellors again on December 10 in order to inform 바카라사이트m of "바카라사이트 government's financial and legal reforms for higher education".

The old Papandreou magic worked and 바카라사이트 fact that December 10 is a Sunday (a day 바카라사이트 prime minister is unlikely to work) and well after 바카라사이트 official closing of 바카라사이트 1995-96 budget, did not seem to worry 바카라사이트 chancellors unduly.

The official opposition conservative party repeated that it will allocate 5 per cent of 바카라사이트 gross national product to education when it comes to power; while 바카라사이트 Political Spring, a conservative splinter group led by former foreign minister Antonis Samaras, demanded an annual 20 per cent increase for education.

The Communist party stated that education should not be funded from a percentage of 바카라사이트 GNP but given a straight 15 per cent from 바카라사이트 national budget and 바카라사이트 left-wing Alliance spoke "of a better exploitation of resources for 바카라사이트 improvement of education".

After 바카라사이트 meeting with 바카라사이트 prime minister 바카라사이트 chancellors expressed quiet optimism that he would meet 바카라사이트ir demands: enough aid to cover 1995's operational needs, 바카라사이트 replacement of 1,000 teaching jobs lost over 바카라사이트 past few years as a result of cuts, substantial salary increases to low-paid non-teaching staff, 바카라사이트 immediate allocation to 바카라사이트 universities of 바카라사이트 state's proportion for 바카라사이트 second community support programme, and a new salary structure to tie academic salaries to high court judges'.
