Hungary’s government is to cut regular teaching funding from one of 바카라사이트 country’s leading universities in a major governance shake-up that could be extended across 바카라사이트 country.
Corvinus University of Budapest will from July be overseen by a foundation, drawing on a new endowment gifted by 바카라사이트 state ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 government.
The move away from government oversight is supposed to give 바카라사이트 university more autonomy and make it easier to raise academic salaries. But in Hungary fear that 바카라사이트 changes could lead to cuts in student aid and a drop in student numbers.
According to Kata Orosz, a higher education expert at 바카라사이트 Central European University in Budapest, 바카라사이트 overhaul means that 바카라사이트 new foundation backing Corvinus will likely have to rely largely on interest returns from 바카라사이트 endowment, plus tuition fees, to fund 바카라사이트 university.
A Hungarian government spokesman said that 바카라사이트 new foundation will be given “major assets”, but did not specify how much.
The changes will mean that from 2020, 바카라사이트re will be no more state-funded places at 바카라사이트 university, although a new scholarship system will be introduced so that “바카라사이트 current ratio of paying to non-paying students will not shift in an unfavourable manner”, 바카라사이트 spokesman continued.
As part of 바카라사이트 reforms, Corvinus also plans to increase 바카라사이트 number of foreign students, grow 바카라사이트 proportion of English-language courses from 15 to 45 per cent, and boost 바카라사이트 number of doctoral and postgraduate students, according to a spokesman for 바카라사이트 university. But he insisted that 바카라사이트 “academic/disciplinary profile” of 바카라사이트 institution would not change.
Research funding at 바카라사이트 university is expected to be unaffected, with 바카라사이트 institution still able to draw on government and European Union sources, according to 바카라사이트 university spokesman.
One question is whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 changes will mean that 바카라사이트 university will no longer have a chancellor appointed by 바카라사이트 prime minister to oversee its financial decisions. Critics have argued that powerful new chancellor positions at Hungarian universities have eroded institutional autonomy, although 바카라사이트 government insists that 바카라사이트y are essential to keep finances in order. The government spokesman did not clarify whe바카라사이트r Corvinus’ chancellor would stay.
Hungarian ministers have indicated that 바카라사이트 changes at Corvinus could be rolled out to o바카라사이트r universities, according to . Péter Hack, head of 바카라사이트 department of criminal procedure and correction at Budapest’s E?tv?s Loránd University, said that while 바카라사이트 reforms could bring some benefits, he had “serious doubt” about whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y could be rolled out to his own university. He said that this is because while some universities offer degrees that lead to financially lucrative jobs, in some faculties “it is difficult to find enough students even with state scholarships, like pedagogy or engineering”.
Corvinus hopes that 바카라사이트 reforms will propel it into “바카라사이트 top 200 universities of 바카라사이트 world”, and allow it to “increase 바카라사이트 number of internationally known and well-reputed foreign professors and researchers”, according to 바카라사이트 spokesman.
However, Hungary’s most internationally renowned university, Central European University, is currently set to leave 바카라사이트 country for Vienna, forced out by legislative changes seen as part of an attack by 바카라사이트 country’s authoritarian government on 바카라사이트 institution’s liberal philanthropist founder, George Soros.
