International issues 'ignored' in White Paper

Ahead of 바카라사이트 publication of 바카라사이트 strategy document in June, Joanna Newman, director of 바카라사이트 UK Higher Education International and Europe Unit, met with a senior official from 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

In its submission for 바카라사이트 White Paper, 바카라사이트 unit said it was asked to "provide BIS with its views on which areas of 바카라사이트 internationalisation of higher education should be prioritised in 바카라사이트 White Paper".

However, when it appeared, 바카라사이트 paper barely mentioned international issues: instead it focused almost exclusively on student number control and deregulation.

Dr Newman and Colin Riordan, chair of 바카라사이트 international unit and vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Essex, have now written to 바카라사이트 higher education directorate at BIS.

They say it was "notable that 바카라사이트 paper makes no substantial reference to one of 바카라사이트 most prominent strategic challenges facing higher education institutions today".

They add that following 바카라사이트 Browne Review, changes to funding, "바카라사이트 resulting student riots" and changes to 바카라사이트 student visa system, "바카라사이트re has been a spate of bad press internationally that has 바카라사이트 potential to impact on institutions' ability to internationalise".

"There needs to be a concerted effort to improve consistent and positive messaging to overseas governments," 바카라사이트 letter says.

Professor Riordan and Dr Newman argue that 바카라사이트 UK must remain at 바카라사이트 forefront of 바카라사이트 strategic shift away from international student recruitment towards "exchanges, internationalisation of curricula, teaching partnerships and research collaborations".

David Willetts, 바카라사이트 universities and science minister, said in July that plans for a chapter on internationalisation in 바카라사이트 White Paper had been dropped because "it was not going to fit in with 바카라사이트 central focus on 바카라사이트 English teaching academic experience issue".
