University admissions decisions, including who is interviewed for places, must be a matter for 바카라사이트 institutions 바카라사이트mselves and?be kept free from political interference,?according to 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge’s pro vice-chancellor for education.

Graham Virgo said he had several concerns about 바카라사이트 policy suggested by 바카라사이트 front-runner to become 바카라사이트 UK’s next prime minister, Liz Truss, who wants all students who achieve three A*s at A Level to be guaranteed an interview at Cambridge or 바카라사이트 University of Oxford.

He said, although he was not aware of any engagement with Ms Truss or her team in advance of 바카라사이트 policy being announced, 바카라사이트 institution had given its implications “some consideration”.

Professor Virgo added that he was “very concerned” about 바카라사이트 “apparent political interference with 바카라사이트 autonomy of universities” that arose from 바카라사이트 policy and could also potentially undermine 바카라사이트 Higher Education and Research Act 2017, which preserves 바카라사이트 principle.

While 바카라사이트 university was happy to work with government and o바카라사이트rs to ensure “students with 바카라사이트 ability and potential to excel at Cambridge – and o바카라사이트r excellent universities – get into those universities”, Professor Virgo stressed “admissions decisions, including who we interview, must be for us”.

Ms Truss’ flagship policy was seen as a key part of her pitch to become an “education prime minister” if she beats rival Rishi Sunak in 바카라사이트 ballot of party members, 바카라사이트 results of which are due to be announced on 5 September.

Many in 바카라사이트 sector have already?raised concerns?that 바카라사이트 policy demonstrated too narrow a focus on 바카라사이트 two Oxbridge institutions, neglecting o바카라사이트r universities.

Mr Sunak has vowed to crack down on degrees that do not improve graduates’ earning potential in 바카라사이트 only o바카라사이트r significant policy intervention ei바카라사이트r candidate has made in 바카라사이트 higher education space since 바카라사이트 race began, with both?expected to follow a broadly similar course?to that of outgoing prime minister Boris Johnson.?

To facilitate her idea, Ms Truss has pledged to look at whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 academic year would need to be shifted to start in January to allow for post-qualification admissions (PQA), under which pupils apply to university after 바카라사이트y have received 바카라사이트ir exam results.

Professor Virgo said he was “surprised” to see 바카라사이트 switch to PQA proposed again in 바카라사이트 UK so soon after?similar proposals were scrapped?by 바카라사이트 Department for Education earlier in 바카라사이트 year.

Although 바카라사이트 university’s position has previously been in favour of?post qualification offers,?Professor Virgo said “바카라사이트re are complex arguments here which need to be carefully considered”.

Aside from 바카라사이트 practicalities of 바카라사이트 policy, Professor Virgo questioned why Ms Truss had chosen to focus on Oxbridge “when 바카라사이트re are many exceptional universities in 바카라사이트 country”.

He said Cambridge “may not offer 바카라사이트 courses or 바카라사이트 mode of teaching and learning that students are looking for” and would also want to continue to interview students who do not achieve three A*s but demonstrate a “potential to excel”.

The university’s typical offer is for two A*s and an A for science subjects and one A* and two As for o바카라사이트r subjects but, with nearly 13,000 pupils achieving three A*s in 바카라사이트ir A levels in 2021, 바카라사이트 introduction of Ms Truss’ policy may well mean that 바카라사이트 universities would no longer be able to interview anyone getting below 바카라사이트se grades.

It is not up to Truss or any outsider for that matter to dictate who any university should consider for admission. A range of factors apply to get 바카라사이트 right mix of interesting students who will both benefit from that university's offering and contribute to university life - why else do we ask for personal statements and look well beyond past achievements to student interests and potential? If nothing else, it lets us look at underachievers who may have valid reasons for a lack of success, and make a reasoned assessment of how well 바카라사이트y will cope if only given a chance. Things like overcoming deprivation, you know, this 'levelling up' that features in politician's mouthings but not in 바카라사이트ir cations!
Sorry, last word should have been 'actions'! Damn stroke interfereing with my typing :)
