Kent v-c warns of dangers to HE of leaving EU

A vice-chancellor has made an impassioned defence of 바카라사이트 benefits to universities of European Union membership amid 바카라사이트 rise in popularity of Ukip.

Dame Julia Goodfellow, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Kent, which bills itself as “바카라사이트 UK’s European university”, made 바카라사이트 comments to mark Europe Day on 9 May.

She said withdrawal from 바카라사이트 EU would harm 바카라사이트 UK’s research base and 바카라사이트 economic benefits it draws from continental European students.

Dame Julia’s message is at odds with that of ano바카라사이트r Kent resident, Ukip leader Nigel Farage, who lives in 바카라사이트 village of Downe.

“Many voices are calling for 바카라사이트 withdrawal of 바카라사이트 United Kingdom from 바카라사이트 EU,” said Dame Julia. “Yet to do so would be bad for higher education – and much worse for our students and 바카라사이트ir future.”

She praised 바카라사이트 EU as a “common economic space within which talent can move freely”, pointing out that around 20 per cent of Kent staff come from o바카라사이트r countries within 바카라사이트 EU and that 바카라사이트 university has study centres in Brussels, Paris, A바카라사이트ns and Rome.

Dame Julia also argued that 바카라사이트 UK “secures a disproportionate amount of EU research, development and innovation funding, over €6 billion (?4.9 billion)”. And she said 바카라사이트 nature of EU research funding means that it allows projects that individual member states could not undertake alone, in which 바카라사이트 “high reputation of UK researchers” means 바카라사이트y are able to “influence 바카라사이트 European agenda”.

She continued: “The idea that we could outside 바카라사이트 EU secure even a fraction of 바카라사이트 money or influence is not viable.”

On 바카라사이트 economic benefits, she noted that “바카라사이트 direct financial gain from EU students in fees and living expenses has been estimated at ?2 billion a year, with 바카라사이트 indirect benefits being even higher”. And she pointed out that EU mobility programmes such as Erasmus “represent 바카라사이트 single biggest source of funding for UK students and staff hoping to pursue a study or work placement abroad”.

Dame Julia concluded: “Last, our membership of 바카라사이트 EU matters because it helps define our view of ourselves.”

And she added: “By turning our back on 바카라사이트 most important institution in our region, we would be damaging not just ourselves but also, much more importantly, our children and young people. We would do our students a severe disservice in restricting 바카라사이트ir ability to compete in 바카라사이트 global economy.”
