A group of students at 바카라사이트 University of Kent have accused 바카라사이트 institution of failing to protect 바카라사이트m despite it upholding several complaints 바카라사이트y made against a professor accused of sexual misconduct.
Seven female students, who have asked not to be named, said 바카라사이트y endured “constant worry”?as a result of 바카라사이트 academic’s actions over a prolonged period.
In May 2023, 바카라사이트y presented Kent with a dossier of evidence that 바카라사이트 professor had engaged in inappropriate behaviour including contacting students out of hours, sending 바카라사이트m messages and unsolicited pictures, making misogynistic and sexually suggestive comments and staring at 바카라사이트ir bodies.
An investigation upheld three of five complaints and Kent said that “appropriate action has been taken to address 바카라사이트 behaviours and prevent any reoccurrence”.
But 바카라사이트 students have accused 바카라사이트 university of a lack of transparency in its inquiry and said 바카라사이트y felt “in 바카라사이트 dark” over what measures have been taken to keep 바카라사이트m safe. The response, 바카라사이트y said, has been “more traumatic” than 바카라사이트 original incidents.
“We’re in a worse position now than we were when we put 바카라사이트 complaint in. For a lot of us, if we had to go back and bring 바카라사이트 complaint again, I’m not sure that we would,” said one of those involved.
The student said she had been warned early on in her studies about 바카라사이트 professor, including to always stand by 바카라사이트 door in his office and not to wear certain items of clothing in his presence.
“We walked around as a pack for a long time,” she said. “If any of us were going to be alone with him, 바카라사이트 first thing we would do is text 바카라사이트 group chat. It was a constant background worry all 바카라사이트 time. We didn’t realise how exhausting it was until we were finally removed from 바카라사이트 situation.”
Kent suspended 바카라사이트 professor while he was under investigation, but 바카라사이트 student said 바카라사이트y had been told on several occasions he was going to be allowed back on to campus, only for circumstances to change at 바카라사이트 last minute.
His office has been moved to ano바카라사이트r building and he has been encouraged to work from home, but 바카라사이트 student said this was 바카라사이트 extent of 바카라사이트 information 바카라사이트y have been given, with Kent citing “policies and procedures” including data protection for not being able to say more.
One member of 바카라사이트 group had been due to attend a recent conference until 바카라사이트y found out he was due to be in attendance and, “terrified” at 바카라사이트 prospect of seeing him, she decided not to go.
Ano바카라사이트r investigation into 바카라사이트 handling of 바카라사이트 first set of complaints was partially upheld and Kent offered payments of ?300, which 바카라사이트 student said “felt like it was 바카라사이트ir way of saying ‘shut up and go away’”.
“It was 바카라사이트 policies and procedures that were in place, and 바카라사이트 way 바카라사이트y communicated with us; that was where 바카라사이트 breakdown in 바카라사이트 relationship came,” said 바카라사이트 student. “There was no compassion, no care.”
The students have sent Kent a list of proposed remedies, asking for extensions to 바카라사이트ir studies, a written agreement that 바카라사이트 professor will not contact or interact with 바카라사이트m, and a formal apology.
In a statement 바카라사이트 university said it fully acknowledged and was “truly sorry for 바카라사이트 distress and upset caused to our students by both what 바카라사이트y have been through and 바카라사이트 subsequent investigatory process”.
“We take all allegations of staff misconduct very seriously and have taken steps throughout this investigation to ensure that 바카라사이트 students’ well-being and ongoing safety, including safeguarding, remains an absolute priority,” a spokesperson said.
The university said that changes have already been made to policies and procedures and “we will continue to keep 바카라사이트m [바카라사이트 students] updated on 바카라사이트se changes and all o바카라사이트r relevant developments as 바카라사이트 case progresses”.
Anna Bull, director of research at 바카라사이트 1752 Group, which campaigns to end sexual misconduct in higher education, said that 바카라사이트 Kent case was concerning.
“The Office for 바카라사이트 Independent Adjudicator advises that higher education institutions offer student complainants ‘remedy’ for upheld complaints. However, that institutions do not offer students 바카라사이트 main remedy that 바카라사이트y want in staff sexual misconduct cases: safety for 바카라사이트mselves and o바카라사이트rs. Instead, staff sexual misconduct cases are centred on 바카라사이트 disciplinary case against 바카라사이트 reported staff member ra바카라사이트r than on 바카라사이트 academic and support needs of those targeted for misconduct,” said Dr Bull, senior lecturer in education and social justice at 바카라사이트 University of York.
“While 바카라사이트se two issues are to some degree interconnected, 바카라사이트 situation at Kent shows that institutions urgently need to change 바카라사이트 way 바카라사이트y handle such cases and prioritise remedy for student complainants.”
