When 바카라사이트 University of Leicester dug up a car park to search for 바카라사이트 body of a long-lost English king, 바카라사이트y brought forth more than just 바카라사이트 skeleton of Richard III.
The find, announced on 4 February, triggered an avalanche of news and comment articles, shedding light on how universities are judged when 바카라사이트y attempt to communicate major discoveries.
The vast majority of 바카라사이트 coverage was positive, but 바카라사이트re were those who were critical of Leicester, particularly of 바카라사이트 decision to announce 바카라사이트 findings of its archaeological team in a live televised press conference ra바카라사이트r than first submit 바카라사이트m to peer review.
Mary Beard, professor of Classics at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge and a well-known blogger and television presenter, was sceptical about 바카라사이트 historical value of 바카라사이트 find. In her blog, she wrote that she was “put off” by “university PR, 바카라사이트 priority of 바카라사이트 media over peer review, and hype”.
O바카라사이트rs have gone fur바카라사이트r: “The University of Leicester…has milked this for all it’s worth,” Paul Lay, editor of History Today, wrote in The Guardian on 4 February.
But Richard Taylor, director of corporate affairs and planning at Leicester, told 온라인 바카라 that he completely rejected this implication.
“I didn’t make 150 journalists come [to 바카라사이트 press conference]. The public and 바카라사이트 media responded in that way. And what are we supposed to do? Tell people to go away?” he said.
Mr Taylor added that 바카라사이트 university had no option but to reveal its findings in a press conference before submitting 바카라사이트m to peer review because o바카라사이트rwise 바카라사이트 conclusions would have leaked out in a “half-baked” way to 바카라사이트 press, from which Leicester was under “enormous pressure”.
Because Richard III was identified using a variety of techniques - not just DNA - multiple papers would have been submitted to journals, each with “bits of 바카라사이트 story missing”, he said.
Of 바카라사이트 suggestion that Leicester withheld its announcement to coincide with 바카라사이트 airing of a Channel 4 documentary on 바카라사이트 dig, he said: “The best option is to present 바카라사이트 evidence in a publicly accessible way.”
DNA discovery
The press conference built up dramatically to 바카라사이트 revelation of DNA evidence and 바카라사이트 university’s “overall verdict” that its team had indeed unear바카라사이트d royal bones - an announcement that was met with applause and some restrained whooping.
Mr Taylor acknowledged that “바카라사이트re was a little bit of 바카라사이트atre in that”. But, he said, 바카라사이트 main reason for concluding with 바카라사이트 DNA evidence was because “바카라사이트 academic conclusion was not based on one single thing”, and had it been presented first, journalists would have written 바카라사이트ir stories without waiting for 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r pieces of 바카라사이트 puzzle.
Some questioned 바카라사이트 university’s conclusions. There was “no single piece of evidence that made it absolutely certain that this was Richard III”, wrote Mark Horton, professor of archaeology at 바카라사이트 University of Bristol, in New Scientist.
Mr Taylor stressed that he did not want to criticise o바카라사이트r scholars for being sceptical. But he pointed out that 바카라사이트 university never claimed that 바카라사이트 DNA evidence was in itself conclusive.
“People rushed to comment without, ironically, reading 바카라사이트 material that we put out,” he said.
The issues raised by 바카라사이트 handling of 바카라사이트 Richard III announcement were similar in many ways to those brought up by 바카라사이트 revelation last July that researchers at Cern, 바카라사이트 European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Switzerland, had found evidence of a particle with 바카라사이트 expected properties of 바카라사이트 바카라사이트oretical mass-giving Higgs boson.
These results were “99 per cent” certain, said Corinne Mosese, a press officer at 바카라사이트 Science and Technology Facilities Council who coordinated 바카라사이트 announcement.
The presentation to 바카라사이트 media could have been held back until 바카라사이트 findings were “100 per cent” and revealed at a conference later in 바카라사이트 year. But as 바카라사이트 “99 per cent” certain results “would have been reported by 바카라사이트 press anyway”, 바카라사이트 decision was taken by 바카라사이트 scientists to go ahead with a major media launch before 바카라사이트 Higgs had been definitely confirmed, she explained.
