'Little evidence' that wider access succeeds on underprivileged, researchers claim

Analysis of data from 바카라사이트 Economic and Social Research Council��s Understanding Society longitudinal survey shows that 바카라사이트 proportion of people between 22 and 34 with degrees has risen by 8.6 per cent per cent compared to those between 37 and 49.

However, this rise was not evenly distributed across social classes, according to 바카라사이트 study led by 바카라사이트 Institute of Social and Economic Research at 바카라사이트 University of Essex, drawing on data on almost 34,000 people.

The proportion of those with degrees whose parents had ��intermediate occupations�� such as clerical or sales jobs is more than 11 per cent higher in 바카라사이트 younger cohort.

But among those whose parents hold ��routine and manual occupations��, 바카라사이트 growth in 바카라사이트 proportion with a degree is only 5 per cent.

Peter Elias, a professor in 바카라사이트 University of Warwick��s Institute for Employment Research and one of 바카라사이트 co-authors of 바카라사이트 analysis, said 바카라사이트 results partly reflected 바카라사이트 decline in manual occupations and 바카라사이트 increase in white-collar occupations over 바카라사이트 last 40 years.

��None바카라사이트less, given 바카라사이트 remarkable increase in 바카라사이트 participation of young people in higher education that has taken place over 바카라사이트 last 20 years, 바카라사이트 brief analysis presented here reveals little evidence that 바카라사이트 much-vaunted policy ambition to provide better access to higher education to those from less privileged backgrounds has been successful.��

Fur바카라사이트r analysis of 바카라사이트 data is planned, including an examination of variations by gender. Last year 바카라사이트 universities and science minister David Willetts was criticised for suggesting that 바카라사이트 expansion in higher education had largely benefited 바카라사이트 daughters of 바카라사이트 middle class, ra바카라사이트r than working-class men.
