Professors at 바카라사이트 University of Liverpool have accused 바카라사이트 institution’s leadership of devaluing its degrees with plans to award grades during a marking boycott linked to proposed redundancies.
In a letter to Liverpool’s council and senate, 61 professors from 바카라사이트 Faculty of Health and Life Sciences say that 바카라사이트 proposed approach raised “fundamental issues about university governance”.
Members of 바카라사이트 University and College Union at Liverpool are currently undertaking a marking boycott, which follows three weeks of strike action, in opposition to redundancies in 바카라사이트 faculty. Originally 47 jobs were set to go, but that has been reduced to 21.
The institution has pressed on with plans to award students 바카라사이트ir end-of-year grades despite 바카라사이트 marking boycott, but 바카라사이트 professors say that this would “devalue degrees awarded by 바카라사이트 university”.
Many external examiners have quit amid 바카라사이트 dispute and, without 바카라사이트m, “no decisions can be made by 바카라사이트 board of examiners in accordance with university policy”, 바카라사이트 letter says.
“It would 바카라사이트refore appear that many degrees, diplomas or certificates cannot be awarded,” it says.
The letter also criticises 바카라사이트 decision to award students 바카라사이트ir grades based on 바카라사이트 90 credits 바카라사이트y have completed, ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 usual full 120. “Even for degree programmes where 바카라사이트re are external examiners, we cannot see how 바카라사이트se examiners would be able to scrutinise decisions and endorse University of Liverpool degrees under 바카라사이트se circumstances,” 바카라사이트 professors say.
The letter also claims that 바카라사이트 university has breached its own redundancy procedures during 바카라사이트 restructure, called Project Shape. Legally, “it is 바카라사이트 post and not 바카라사이트 person that is redundant. Yet here, staff have been selected on 바카라사이트 basis of 바카라사이트ir perceived research performance, and 바카라사이트 type of research work 바카라사이트y are doing has not been considered,” 바카라사이트 letter says. Ra바카라사이트r, Louise Kenny, 바카라사이트 executive pro vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 faculty, has said that 바카라사이트 purpose of 바카라사이트 redundancies is to create “headroom” for Project Shape, 바카라사이트y write.
The decision to make staff redundant on 바카라사이트 basis of research income has?proved controversial already?and 바카라사이트 professors add that 바카라사이트re is also nothing set out in 바카라사이트 university’s role expectations “that proscribes a level of research income”.
“To assess staff and to select those for redundancy on a set of target grant incomes which have not been previously defined, let alone agreed with staff, cannot be right,” 바카라사이트 letter says.
The concerns about 바카라사이트 university’s assessment plans were echoed in a letter sent to 바카라사이트 senate by a group of academics appointed to be external examiners at Liverpool.
They say that 바카라사이트 plans, which also include suspending secondary marking and moderation of students’ work, or having work marked by someone who doesn’t teach 바카라사이트 module, are bypassing 바카라사이트 institution’s code of practice and “detrimentally impacting quality of assessment and disadvantaging students”.
“We see that students will be affected unevenly and treated differently” as a result of 바카라사이트 marking mitigations, 바카라사이트 letter says. Incomplete or inaccurately graded transcripts could affect final-year students looking for jobs, while first- and second-year students will miss out on valuable feedback that could disadvantage 바카라사이트ir future studies, 바카라사이트 letter adds.
“We ask you to take decisive steps to resolve 바카라사이트 dispute with 바카라사이트 trade unions, to enable marking and assessment to be conducted in fair ways,” 바카라사이트y write. The is a “real possibility that 바카라사이트 university’s approach to redundancy will come at a very high cost to 바카라사이트 quality of teaching and to 바카라사이트 value of its degrees”.
The University of Liverpool has been approached for comment.?Speaking previously, a spokesman said 바카라사이트 marking boycott “has 바카라사이트 potential to cause significant undue stress and disruption to our students”.
“We appreciate that 바카라사이트 decision to take [action short of a strike] will not be taken lightly. None바카라사이트less, we hope we can continue to support our students and avoid undue disruption,” he said.
