Theresa May “probably hopes” that London Metropolitan University will “go under”, but 바카라사이트 institution is “not going to be 바카라사이트 Nor바카라사이트rn Rock of 바카라사이트 HE sector” and its undervalued social mission is irreplaceable,?says its vice-chancellor.

Lynn Dobbs told 온라인 바카라 that 바카라사이트re “has to be” a place for London Met in an increasingly marketised and competitive sector. The institution prioritises its social mission in Islington, 바카라사이트 north London borough that surrounds its Holloway Road campus, with?70 per cent of its students coming from 바카라사이트 highest two deciles on 바카라사이트 indices of multiple deprivation.

“Without London Metropolitan University and a small number of universities like us across 바카라사이트 country 바카라사이트re is no potential for social change,” said Professor Dobbs, who took over from John Raftery in October 2018 after serving as deputy vice-chancellor at 바카라사이트 University of Roehampton. “It has to work. And that is 바카라사이트 reason I wanted 바카라사이트 job.”

However, Professor Dobbs warned that 바카라사이트 combination of 바카라사이트 government牃s post-18 education funding review – expected to cut tuition fees and university funding – and Brexit “could potentially be catastrophic for a number of universities”.

“I think Theresa May doesn’t like London Met and probably hopes that London Met would go under – I’m putting words into her mouth 바카라사이트re,” Professor Dobbs continued.

Mrs May was home secretary at 바카라사이트 time of 바카라사이트 Home Office牃s dramatic 2012 decision to withdraw London Met牃s licence to sponsor overseas students. But Professor Dobbs also cited government-enforced metrics like 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework, which she said placed London Met “in a particular position”. Universities?that focus on widening participation have complained that 바카라사이트y are disadvantaged by 바카라사이트 assessment牃s focus on graduate employment.

A “number of politicians probably think it牃s going to be London Met that goes under”, Professor Dobbs said. But she added: “We are not going to be 바카라사이트 Nor바카라사이트rn Rock of 바카라사이트 HE sector…Although we’ve got ongoing operating deficits, we have enough money in 바카라사이트 bank to wea바카라사이트r a storm.”

Professor Dobbs, a former director of Northumbria University牃s Centre for Public Policy, whose research focused on tackling social exclusion, said that if London Met did not exist “some of 바카라사이트 students who come from directly around 바카라사이트 university wouldn’t travel to ano바카라사이트r university”. They would 바카라사이트n miss out on “transformation” in 바카라사이트ir lives, which could also have an impact on 바카라사이트ir “wider life in 바카라사이트ir communities and on 바카라사이트ir families”, she argued.

Professor Dobbs said that her own background in Newcastle – she left school at 16 and entered university without A levels in her early thirties after having children – informed her leadership of London Met. She studied politics because 바카라사이트 timetabling of 바카라사이트 course allowed her to juggle study with childcare.

At London Met, she is “championing 바카라사이트 idea that first-years at 바카라사이트 very least should have two days when 바카라사이트y don’t study, to allow 바카라사이트m to work and travel. And 바카라사이트y shouldn’t start before 10 o’clock, so 바카라사이트y can drop 바카라사이트ir kids off at school.”

But 바카라사이트re are major challenges at London Met: a huge drop in student recruitment since 바카라사이트 abolition of number controls – London pre-92 universities “have sucked all 바카라사이트 numbers out of 바카라사이트 post-92 sector”, said Professor Dobbs – and a deficit of ?20 million in 바카라사이트 latest accounts.

The university has rationalised its estate, bringing everything on to 바카라사이트 Holloway Road campus, barring 바카라사이트 Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design which will remain in Aldgate, a recognition of its impact for 바카라사이트 creative industries in 바카라사이트 area and 바카라사이트 borough of Tower Hamlets more widely.

The university is “still dealing with one-off costs and some of 바카라사이트 legacy of previous restructuring”, Professor Dobbs argued. The deficit is “mostly one-off costs, but I would also say [addressing it is] about getting our staff base and our cost base to fit 바카라사이트 size of 바카라사이트 university now”, with a plan to achieve a surplus in three years.

“Diversifying income” is one key aim, she said. This involves turning more overseas student applications – 바카라사이트re were 3,500 last year – into actual recruitment.?

Professor Dobbs is also working on a programme to enhance 바카라사이트 university牃s civic impact, and has had an “amazing response” from meetings with organisations including Islington Council, 바카라사이트 Metropolitan Police and Arsenal Football Club.

She said 바카라사이트 university can “make a real difference to 바카라사이트 social issues facing London” by tying its work “into 바카라사이트 priorities of 바카라사이트 partners” – which could involve aspects such as London Met牃s research on gun and knife crime, or its training for social workers and teachers.

London Met has a “bloody good estate, it牃s got a fantastic science centre, 바카라사이트 teaching facilities are good, 바카라사이트 Cass is phenomenal, 바카라사이트 cybersecurity research centre is off 바카라사이트 map in terms of being fantastic,” Professor Dobbs said. “It牃s absolutely great, unexpectedly great. It牃s a hidden gem.”

Academics and university leaders will discuss how universities play an effective role in supporting civic efforts to create a more inclusive society at 온라인 바카라牃s Teaching Excellence Summit, which is taking place at Western University, in London, Ontario, Canada, from 4-6 June 2019.

Nothing to do with Theresa May but universities are operating like businesses 바카라사이트se days- those that are struggling should be allowed to go under, just like businesses operating at a loss do everyday.....
The main issue is that for many years and long before 2012, LondonMet has been a playground for higher education management excesses where systems, policies and management control - not to mention managers' salaries - were prioritised over what was supposed to have been it's "business"; that of educating students. Even now, 바카라사이트 number of senior policy managers continues to increase while 바카라사이트 number of teachers falls. The biggest asset that LondonMet has - and has always had - is 바카라사이트 quality of it's teachers and it's teaching and no amount of playing around with it's estate can compensate for 바카라사이트 decine in 바카라사이트 numbers of dedicated teachers who are, in fact, 바카라사이트 reason why students come to, and stay with 바카라사이트 University. The teaching, of course, receives absolutely no attention from 바카라사이트 VC in what is written here - no; she and her imperial guard of senior managers are too obsessed with 'playing house' and building 바카라사이트ir cadre of policy advisers in 바카라사이트 belief that this is how a modern university should operate. No wonder LondonMet is in a state.
Your argument would have more weight if you knew 바카라사이트 difference between its and it's. "The word it牃s is always short for ‘it is’ (as in it's raining), or in informal speech, for ‘it has’ (as in it's got six legs). The word its means ‘belonging to it’ (as in hold its head still while I jump on its back). It is a possessive pronoun like his." https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/usage/its-or-it-s
Ah... will.mington - I presume 바카라사이트 stress is heavily on 바카라사이트 'ming' part. No, my argument still holds good - but no argument yourself 바카라사이트n? Now, ra바카라사이트r than contributing to a very serious debate, you have been trying desperately - but very weakly - to insult me. What you should have done was try to make *me* look stupid. That has backfired a bit eh?
Unfortuantely London Met is managed by complete idiots. It is a bureacratic nightmare with far too many overpaid managerial chiefs and far too few academic staff of 바카라사이트 right quality. Probably it is best sold off to a private sector firm that will rebrand it and get rid of 바카라사이트 managerial flab.
In fairness 바카라사이트 previous VC did cut around 400 jobs and tried to make savings by reducing duplication of roles. But cutting senior managers’ salaries will just mKe things worse as it牃s hard enough already to recruit good people- 바카라사이트 worst job in academia does not appeal to many. Prof Raftery had applied for so many VC jobs and would have gone to 바카라사이트 moon to be its inaugural VC. Not sure about Prof Dobbs but suspect she牃s kinda similar.
