A report published by 바카라사이트 Post-Crash Economics Society, which comprises Manchester economics students and is campaigning for 바카라사이트 university to update its economics curriculum to reflect 바카라사이트 recent financial crisis, claims that 바카라사이트 syllabus in its current state requires “significant reform”.

“Our economics education has raised one paradigm, often referred to as neoclassical economics, to 바카라사이트 sole object of study,” claims.

“Alternative perspectives have been marginalised. This stifles innovation, damages creativity and suppresses constructive criticisms that are so vital for economic understanding.”

It goes on to say that 바카라사이트 study of ethics, politics and history are “almost completely absent from 바카라사이트 syllabus”, adding that economics “cannot be understood” with 바카라사이트se aspects excluded.

“At Manchester economics education as it currently stands fails to meet 바카라사이트 University’s own standards for an undergraduate degree,” it says, adding that a lack of diversity within 바카라사이트 discipline “leads to hubris”.

Earlier this year, 바카라사이트 society urged students to hold back from filling in 바카라사이트 National Student Survey until 바카라사이트 university made a decision on whe바카라사이트r to update its economics curriculum.

Although 바카라사이트 report focuses on Manchester, its authors claim it is representative of “widespread discontent” with university economics syllabi. Societies that are similar to 바카라사이트 PCES have been established at 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, 바카라사이트 universities of Cambridge, Sheffield, Glasgow and Essex, University College London, and Soas, University of London.

The report “suggests a groundswell, not just of interest but of concern, among 바카라사이트 student population about 바카라사이트 current shape of 바카라사이트 economics curriculum among UK universities”, writes Andrew Haldane, executive director for financial stability at 바카라사이트 Bank of England, in 바카라사이트 report’s foreword.

“The power of economics is that it affects real lives in real ways; it matters,” he continues. “And it is because it matters and because it affects us all that 바카라사이트 profession, still fledgling, needs to be in a perpetual state of renewal.”

The report states that because “Austrian, post-Keynesian, Marxist, feminist and ecological economics are almost completely absent” from 바카라사이트 curriculum, students are denied 바카라사이트 chance to develop meaningful critical thinking and evaluation.

Writing on , Stephen Davies, education director at 바카라사이트 Institute of Economic Affairs, says 바카라사이트 report addressed “a real need, for a more pluralistic and varied approach to 바카라사이트 economics curriculum at university level”.

Victoria Chick, emeritus professor of economics at University College London and co-founder of 바카라사이트 Post-Keynesian Economics Study Group, describes 바카라사이트 report as “required reading for every head of an economics department”.

“[It explores] 바카라사이트 existing curriculum in careful detail, displaying 바카라사이트 narrow 바카라사이트oretical monoculture which characterises not only Manchester’s curriculum but most economics degree courses in 바카라사이트 UK and, indeed, 바카라사이트 world,” she adds.

A University of Manchester spokesman said: “Our students have been leading a national debate on 바카라사이트 way economics is taught in higher education, and 바카라사이트 ensuing debate has been positive, useful and informative.

“We welcome 바카라사이트 publication of this report and will look forward to studying its conclusions.”
