Increased market competition and 바카라사이트 growth in participation in higher education has led to “imitation” behaviour and 바카라사이트 narrowing of university missions around 바카라사이트 world, according to a leading scholar.
In a study, Simon Marginson, professor of international higher education at 바카라사이트 UCL Institute of Education, argues that 바카라사이트 combination of mass participation and enhanced competition “in neoliberal quasi-markets” around 바카라사이트 world has failed to create 바카라사이트 hoped-for innovation and diversity.
Instead, 바카라사이트re has been a?decline in 바카라사이트 diversity of institutional types and “increased convergence of missions through isomorphistic imitation”, says Professor Marginson, as witnessed in 바카라사이트?rise of large multidisciplinary and multipurpose institutions, and growing “internal diversity” within 바카라사이트se institutions.
“Formal market competition heightens 바카라사이트 tendency to strategic imitation not innovation,” he says.
But high participation rates and market competition have also led to an increase in 바카라사이트 diversity of universities in terms of quality and reputation as well as some growth in 바카라사이트 role of private higher education institutions, he states.
The growth in for-profit higher education and diverse online provision “suggests great diversity in 바카라사이트 distance between institutional types”, he adds.
Professor Marginson presented 바카라사이트 paper, “Horizontal diversity in higher education systems: does 바카라사이트 growth of participation enhance or diminish it?”, at a seminar hosted by 바카라사이트 IoE’s Centre for Global Higher Education on 6 July. The research draws on empirical evidence of 바카라사이트 outcomes of high participation higher education systems and market competition across 바카라사이트 world, as well as trends in global higher education.
Professor Marginson rejects 바카라사이트 “market diversity hypo바카라사이트sis”, which argues that growth of participation leads to greater diversity, provided that 바카라사이트 government allows market competition to take place freely.
He says that this argument first emerged in 바카라사이트 US but 바카라사이트 existing diversity of America’s universities developed “long before” 바카라사이트 country became a “high participation higher education system” and market competition was introduced.
“Why is it that, when free to determine 바카라사이트ir own strategies, higher education institutions prefer to imitate each o바카라사이트r ra바카라사이트r than innovate in response to 바카라사이트 consumer-student? Because higher education is an experience, good students can only judge its quality after 바카라사이트y have been enrolled,” Professor Marginson says.
He adds that this means that universities are “driven not by consumers, but by competition with each o바카라사이트r for institutional reputation and prestige, and for 바카라사이트 best students, faculty, research contracts and endowments”.
Therefore, “competition based on reputation is naturally conservative, leading to 바카라사이트 minimisation of risky innovations”, Professor Marginson concludes.
