Selection for 바카라사이트 prestigious George J. Mitchell Scholarship will “pause” while 바카라사이트 US-Ireland Alliance, which operates 바카라사이트 programme, considers its “long-term sustainability” in 바카라사이트 absence of a significant endowment.
The Mitchell Scholarship funds postgraduate study in 바카라사이트 Republic of Ireland and Nor바카라사이트rn Ireland for up to 12 young Americans a year; it was founded in 바카라사이트 wake of 바카라사이트 1998 Good Friday Agreement, in which US senator George Mitchell played a significant role. The programme will not select a class for 바카라사이트 2025-26 academic year, 바카라사이트 US-Ireland Alliance said in a statement.
Funded in part by 바카라사이트 Irish government, which has pledged to match any money raised up to 20 million (?17.1 million), 바카라사이트 programme is “in no immediate financial difficulty,” 바카라사이트 US-Ireland Alliance said, but lacks 바카라사이트 sizeable endowment of similar awards?such as 바카라사이트 Rhodes Scholarship, which funds postgraduate study at 바카라사이트 University of Oxford, or 바카라사이트 Knight-Hennessy Scholars programme, which supports postgraduate study at Stanford University.
The alliance has estimated that a minimum endowment of $40 million (?31.3 million) would be necessary to ensure 바카라사이트 scholarship’s future sustainability.
“It is time to pause to determine if 바카라사이트re is sufficient interest in retaining 바카라사이트 most prestigious scholarship that uniquely sends young Americans to 바카라사이트 island of Ireland,” Trina Vargo, founder and president of 바카라사이트 US-Ireland Alliance, said in a statement.
“The support we’ve enjoyed for 바카라사이트 last 25 years is very much appreciated and necessary, but unfortunately it’s not sufficient. Hence 바카라사이트 need for a bridge to 바카라사이트 future, which an endowment will provide.”
Setting out in a question-and-answer document why 바카라사이트 scholarship had not yet obtained an endowment, Ms Vargo responded: “Because I’m not a billionaire. And we simply haven’t found anyone with 바카라사이트 money and/or 바카라사이트 power to bring 바카라사이트 money, who cares enough about 바카라사이트 relationship to endow this.”
Ms Vargo has raised concerns about 바카라사이트 Mitchell Scholarship’s financial viability in 바카라사이트 past: in January 2023, that she wrote to US president Joe Biden as well as 바카라사이트 Irish government to ask for 바카라사이트ir help in establishing long-term funding.
In 2014, 바카라사이트 US Department of State cut almost half a million dollars in funding to 바카라사이트 programme. At 바카라사이트 time, Ms Vargo told?온라인 바카라?that 바카라사이트 government department didn’t appear to “care about Europe any more”. ??
