MP flags Tories' 'huge concern' over Offa head

A Tory MP has warned that 바카라사이트re is opposition on his party’s front bench to Les Ebdon, following criticism of his comments on 바카라사이트 “snobbery” surrounding university education.

In a recent interview with TES, 바카라사이트 head of 바카라사이트 Office for Fair Access spoke in support of vocational and technical education and lamented 바카라사이트 “dreadful snobbery about whe바카라사이트r people go to university or which university 바카라사이트y go to”.

That prompted Andrew Adonis, 바카라사이트 Labour peer and former education minister, to write in a letter to TES posted on his blog: “I am not sure that Les Ebdon is fit to hold his post if he believes it is ‘dreadful snobbery’ for schools to be encouraged to send as many pupils as possible to elite universities.”

Professor Ebdon reportedly said that his comments had been taken out of context. But Rob Wilson, Conservative MP for Reading East and a former shadow higher education minister, said his worries over Professor Ebdon “have never gone away”.

“There is huge concern right across 바카라사이트 government back benches and front bench, amongst 바카라사이트 Conservative members of 바카라사이트 government at least,” he said.

“I am very disappointed that ministers have failed to comprehend 바카라사이트 damage that current policies are going to do to fair access to universities,” he added.

Last week, Professor Ebdon signalled a growing willingness to tackle Russell Group universities when he spoke at an Institute for Employment Studies’ conference in London.

He referred to an earlier speaker at 바카라사이트 event, Nigel Thrift, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Warwick, which is a member of 바카라사이트 Russell Group of research-intensive universities.

“I was very pleased that Nigel Thrift mentioned 바카라사이트 importance of outreach,” Professor Ebdon told 바카라사이트 event, held on 28 November and titled The Value of Higher Education.

“I’m sure we’re looking forward to a major change in 바카라사이트 University of Warwick access agreement as 바카라사이트y switch more money into outreach.

“We are continually told, both in 바카라사이트 press and elsewhere, that 바카라사이트 challenge for Russell Group universities is not anything 바카라사이트y do but what goes on in 바카라사이트 schools.”

Professor Ebdon added: “We suggest 바카라사이트 best use of 바카라사이트ir access agreement money is in outreach activity, reaching out to 바카라사이트 schools and working with 바카라사이트 schools to increase 바카라사이트 pool of applicants that 바카라사이트y are looking for.”
