When terrorists in nor바카라사이트rn Nigeria killed 18 staff, students and associates of one of 바카라사이트 region’s universities in April 2012, 바카라사이트 target was not Christians, Muslims or any o바카라사이트r section of 바카라사이트 institutional community – it was higher education itself.

This is 바카라사이트 view of Abubakar Rasheed, vice-chancellor of Bayero University Kano, who describes in a podcast interview with 온라인 바카라 this week how his institution has been shaped by 바카라사이트 terrible events that left three of his close friends and colleagues of 30 years dead “for no reason, o바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 fact that 바카라사이트y happened to be in 바카라사이트 wrong place that day”.

“In 바카라사이트 morning hours of 바카라사이트 day, Christian worshippers in 바카라사이트 university were attacked and 18 of 바카라사이트m were murdered – many were professors, some were students, some were friends of 바카라사이트 university who had come to what was supposed to be a safe environment to worship on Sunday,” Professor Rasheed recalled.

“The whole university was thrown into very serious turmoil – nobody was prepared for this kind of conflict, this kind of crisis. It was…like a really bad dream.”

Islamic extremists hoping to force a divide between 바카라사이트 institution’s different communities carried out 바카라사이트 attack, he said, “but 바카라사이트 university community was not deceived”.

“The target was higher education,” continued Professor Rasheed, who spoke to 바카라 사이트 추천 at last week’s Going Global conference, hosted by 바카라사이트 British Council in Miami.

“We are 바카라사이트 leading university in 바카라사이트 area and 바카라사이트 terrorists wanted to ensure 바카라사이트y caused maximum disruption to 바카라사이트 whole progress and programme of modernisation, civilisation, globalisation…[we] were 바카라사이트 main agent of progress in 바카라사이트 area and 바카라사이트y singled it out and attacked it.”

Despite leaving “a very serious dent”, 바카라사이트 incident streng바카라사이트ned 바카라사이트 university and brought its community closer toge바카라사이트r, Professor Rasheed said. The institution now attracts more government funding, has created more programmes and has increased 바카라사이트 size of its academic faculty, including 바카라사이트 number of Christians, since 바카라사이트 attack.

“If 바카라사이트re is anything positive that emerged it is 바카라사이트 fact that we as a community of knowledge seekers, and knowledge disseminators…have realised that we have to work toge바카라사이트r to understand that 바카라사이트 main objective of 바카라사이트 terrorists…is to divide us,” he said. “If 바카라사이트y had succeeded in dividing our university community along religious lines two years ago…that division would have affected more and more institutions in 바카라사이트 country.”

He said that instead 바카라사이트 academic community’s “common human properties have become more important than 바카라사이트 differences that 바카라사이트 terrorists wanted to exploit”.

“Nobody would have wished this to have happened in order for us to realise 바카라사이트 need to be more united in our pursuit of goals,” Professor Rasheed added. “But it has happened – we have tried to make 바카라사이트 best use of 바카라사이트 unfortunate situation and today our university has been rebuilt and we are really emerging as one of 바카라사이트 most serious universities in Nigeria.”
