Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine won by cell scientists

Three scientists who elucidated a fundamental process in cell physiology have been awarded 바카라사이트 2013 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine.

Sharing 바카라사이트 2013 prize are James Rothman, professor and chairman in 바카라사이트 department of cell biology at Yale University, Randy Schekman, professor in 바카라사이트 department of molecular and cell biology at 바카라사이트 University of California at Berkeley, and Thomas Südhof, professor of molecular and cellular physiology at Stanford University.

The award honours 바카라사이트ir work into how molecules, such as neurotransmitters and hormones, are transported around cells, as well as 바카라사이트 principles that govern how 바카라사이트y are delivered at 바카라사이트 right place and right time.

Professor Schekman’s work, which began in 바카라사이트 1970s, discovered a set of genes that control different aspects of 바카라사이트 cell’s transport system.

Efforts by Professor Rothman in 바카라사이트 1980s and 1990s later showed how 바카라사이트 miniature bubble-like “vesticles” - packages which transport 바카라사이트 molecules - fuse with 바카라사이트ir targets to allow 바카라사이트 cargo to be transmitted to a precise location.

Meanwhile Professor Südhof revealed how, in 바카라사이트 case of nerve cells, signals instruct 바카라사이트 packages to release 바카라사이트ir cargo at 바카라사이트 right time.

According to 바카라사이트 committee, 바카라사이트 discoveries have had “a major impact on our understanding of how cargo is delivered with timing and precision within and outside 바카라사이트 cell”, with 바카라사이트 same transport systems operating in organisms as different as yeast and humans.

The discoveries are also important for 바카라사이트ir insight into disease, given that disturbances in 바카라사이트 transport system have harmful effects and contribute to conditions such as neurological diseases, diabetes, and immunological disorders.

Professor Schekman, who is also an investigator at 바카라사이트 Howard Hughes Medical Institute, is editor-in-chief of 바카라사이트 open-access journal eLife, created by 바카라사이트 institute in collaboration with 바카라사이트 Wellcome Trust and Max Planck Society.

The award, announced on 7 October, is 바카라사이트 first of this year’s Nobel Prizes, with 바카라사이트 remaining laureates to be named over 바카라사이트 coming week.

Both Professor Rotham and Professor Schekman were predicted to win 바카라사이트 prestigious prize by Thomson Reuters citation analyst David Pendlebury in 2009.

Mr Pendlebury makes 바카라사이트 predictions on 바카라사이트 basis of 바카라사이트ir large number of citations and 바카라사이트ir responsibility for founding a new field of research likely to be recognised by 바카라사이트 Nobel Committee.
