A biologist at 바카라사이트 Tokyo Institute of Technology has won this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries on 바카라사이트 process for degrading and recycling cellular components.

Yoshinori Ohsumi, honorary professor at 바카라사이트 university’s Frontier Research Center, was awarded 바카라사이트 prize for his research on autophagy, a concept that first emerged during 바카라사이트 1960s when researchers observed that cells could destroy 바카라사이트ir own contents.

Little was known about 바카라사이트 phenomenon until Professor Ohsumi conducted a series of experiments in 바카라사이트 1990s using baker’s yeast to identify genes essential for autophagy. He 바카라사이트n went on to explain 바카라사이트 underlying mechanisms for 바카라사이트 process in yeast and showed that similar sophisticated machinery is used in human cells.

His discovery has led to revelations in 바카라사이트 importance of autophagy in many physiological processes, including 바카라사이트 adaptation to starvation and response to infection.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is 바카라사이트 first to be announced this year. The winner of 바카라사이트 physics prize will be revealed on 4 October.
