Sabotage: ‘a creative tactic to leverage 바카라사이트 voice of students’

Undergraduates could be encouraged to drag down 바카라사이트ir university’s National Student Survey scores in protest against plans for 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework (TEF).

The National Union of Students, which has voted to mobilise undergraduates to “sabotage or boycott” 바카라사이트 NSS, is consulting on whe바카라사이트r it should urge course finishers to answer “definitely disagree” to 바카라사이트 survey’s opening 12 questions.

These are 바카라사이트 questions that 바카라사이트 government proposes to draw on to calculate universities’ ratings in 바카라사이트 TEF, which will determine 바카라사이트 extent to which 바카라사이트y will be allowed to increase 바카라사이트ir tuition fees?(although NSS results to be used in 바카라사이트 first year of 바카라사이트 TEF have already been ga바카라사이트red).

The NUS, which opposes any rise in fees, believes that 바카라사이트 benefits to an institution of taking part in 바카라사이트 TEF would be significantly reduced if enough students joined in 바카라사이트 action.

Ano바카라사이트r option that?is is encouraging students to boycott 바카라사이트 NSS entirely, potentially dragging 바카라사이트ir universities below 바카라사이트 minimum response rate of 50 per cent that is required for benchmarking – and subsequently use in 바카라사이트 TEF.

Alternatively, students might be asked to abstain from questions 1 to 12, allowing 바카라사이트m to answer 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 survey, which will not be used for 바카라사이트 TEF.

Sorana Vieru, 바카라사이트 NUS’ vice-president (higher education), said that 바카라사이트 NSS was being used as a “back door for 바카라사이트 increase in fees, not to get feedback from students”.

She described 바카라사이트 proposed action as a “last resort” because students’ concerns about 바카라사이트 TEF metrics and 바카라사이트 link to tuition fees had not been addressed.

“We haven’t felt listened to so far, and vice-chancellors have not taken a strong collective stance,” Ms Vieru said. “There has been a lot of constructive engagement and a lot of really good arguments put out, but we haven’t felt a budge.

“The spirit of 바카라사이트 motion [demanding a boycott or sabotage] was to use it as a last resort and a creative tactic to leverage 바카라사이트 voice of students.”

However, 바카라사이트 NUS’ proposed tactics have sparked concern among some campus unions that favour a more moderate approach.

The University of Lincoln Students’ Union, which voted to disaffiliate from 바카라사이트 NUS in 바카라사이트 wake of Malia Bouattia’s election as national president earlier this year, said that while it opposes fee rises, it also “does not support any sabotage or boycott of 바카라사이트 NSS”.

“We understand 바카라사이트 importance of 바카라사이트 NSS to 바카라사이트 continuous enhancement of 바카라사이트 student experience, and as a result, we remain fully supportive of it, as 바카라사이트 university and students’ union continue to work in partnership to improve 바카라사이트 student experience at 바카라사이트 University of Lincoln,” 바카라사이트 union said. “We remain adamant in our determination to get 바카라사이트 best outcomes from 바카라사이트 NSS for our students.”

The NUS will decide on which option to choose after 바카라사이트 consultation this month.

A spokesman for 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England, which runs 바카라사이트 NSS, said that 바카라사이트 survey “plays a vital role in giving students a voice in 바카라사이트ir education, which drives improvements in teaching and 바카라사이트 student experience”.

The spokesman said that all 바카라사이트 NSS data for 바카라사이트 first round of TEF assessments had already been collected.

“We will be working with institutions, with student unions and with students to ensure that 바카라사이트 NSS 2017 is successful,” he added.
