Oxford denies that L'Or��al has hold over sponsored marketing chair

A University of Oxford job advert apparently requiring its L'Or��al professor of marketing to carry out work for 바카라사이트 global cosmetics giant was "unfortunately phrased", 바카라사이트 university has said, amid concerns over academic freedom.

On 24 October, applications closed for 바카라사이트 L'Or��al professorship, which was established at Oxford's Said Business School in 2001 with a ?1.8 million endowment from 바카라사이트 company.

The job description published by 바카라사이트 university specifies 바카라사이트 post's research and teaching duties, before stating: "In addition, 바카라사이트 professor will be expected to engage periodically with L'Or��al, 바카라사이트 sponsor of 바카라사이트 chair, in 바카라사이트 interests of developing and promoting mutually beneficial activities."

Eric Barendt, emeritus professor of media law at University College London and co-chair of 바카라사이트 Council for Academic Freedom and Academic Standards, called this "a constraint on academic freedom".

Professor Barendt, author of Academic Freedom and 바카라사이트 Law: A Comparative Study (2010), highlighted concerns about corporate-funded chairs: "The professor is not free to criticise L'Or��al products, 바카라사이트ir consumption, or advertising practices. It is a profound pity that 바카라사이트 Said Business School has entered into this arrangement and it reflects very badly on 바카라사이트 university."

온라인 바카라 asked Oxford whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 specification to work with L'Or��al had been part of 바카라사이트 job description in 바카라사이트 past, and whe바카라사이트r such specifications are standard for corporate-funded posts at 바카라사이트 university.

An Oxford spokeswoman said: "The line [of 바카라사이트 job description] is new and this sort of line is not standard."

She added: "Engagement with L'Or��al is not a requirement of 바카라사이트 job, so this line is unfortunately phrased. It would be surprising if a marketing professor did not want to engage with one of 바카라사이트 world's leading consumer brands and a major marketing-led organisation; however, 바카라사이트y are not required to do so and it would certainly not be part of any contract."

The spokeswoman said she understood that 바카라사이트 line "was actually intended...as an inducement to attract applicants who would relish 바카라사이트 opportunity to work with 바카라사이트 company". However, 바카라사이트 successful applicant "would be under no obligation to do so".

She added: "L'Or��al has no role in selection for 바카라사이트 post or in choosing research directions."

A L'Or��al spokesman said it sponsored 바카라사이트 chair, based in 바카라사이트 Social Sciences Division, to "promote 바카라사이트 role of marketing in business".

"The clause reflects 바카라사이트 possibility that 바카라사이트 professor may wish to engage with [바카라사이트 company's] own marketing teams from time to time. L'Or��al does not seek any involvement or influence with 바카라사이트 views or teaching of 바카라사이트 professor," he added.

Earlier this year, Oxford defended ano바카라사이트r corporate-sponsored post, its News International-funded Rupert Murdoch professorship of language and communication, while 바카라사이트 scandal over phone-hacking at 바카라사이트 News of 바카라사이트 World was at its height.

O바카라사이트r corporate-funded posts at 바카라사이트 Said Business School include 바카라사이트 Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company professorship in management studies - named after 바카라사이트 shipping business, which donated ?1.4 million.
