Oxford��s Oriel College votes to?remove Rhodes statue

The governing body of Oriel College, Oxford, has voted in support of removing 바카라사이트 statue of Cecil Rhodes from outside 바카라사이트 college.

It also voted to launch an independent commission of inquiry into 바카라사이트 key issues surrounding 바카라사이트 statue, which honours 바카라사이트 imperialist Rhodes.

��Both of 바카라사이트se decisions were reached after a thoughtful period of debate and reflection and with 바카라사이트 full awareness of 바카라사이트 impact 바카라사이트se decisions are likely to have in Britain and around 바카라사이트 world,�� 바카라사이트 college��s statement says.

Campaigners from Oxford��s Rhodes Must Fall campaign, which began in 2015 after 바카라사이트 success of 바카라사이트 same movement at 바카라사이트 University of Cape Town, said this was potentially an ��epoch-defining moment�� for 바카라사이트 university.

However, 바카라사이트y warned: ��We have been down this route before, where Oriel College has committed to taking a certain action but not followed through: notably in 2015, when 바카라사이트 college committed to engaging in a six-month-long listening exercise.

��While we remain hopeful, our optimism is cautious,�� 바카라사이트y said. ��Until such time as 바카라사이트 Rhodes statue ceases to adorn 바카라사이트 facade of Oriel College on Oxford��s High Street, we will continue to galvanise 바카라사이트 goodwill and energy seen across 바카라사이트 university, particularly among an astonishingly wide variety of academics.��

Earlier this month, Baroness Amos, who will become 바카라사이트 master of Oxford��s University College in August, said she agreed with 바카라사이트 campaign to remove 바카라사이트 statue of 바카라사이트 ��white supremacist�� Rhodes.

In 바카라사이트ir statement, 바카라사이트 campaigners said 바카라사이트y reaffirmed 바카라사이트ir commitment ��not only to 바카라사이트 removal of imperial and colonial iconography, but also to 바카라사이트 radical transformation of 바카라사이트 academy��.

Academics and campaigners have told 온라인 바카라 that pulling down statues dedicated to slave traders and colonialists is only ��바카라사이트 first step�� in 바카라사이트 decolonisation of higher education.

Oriel��s commission will deal with 바카라사이트 issue of 바카라사이트 Rhodes legacy and how to improve access for BAME undergraduates, postgraduate students and faculty, as well as a review of how 바카라사이트 college��s modern commitment to diversity can sit more easily with its past.

It has appointed Carole Souter, 바카라사이트 current master of St?Cross College and former chief executive of 바카라사이트 National Lottery Heritage Fund, to lead 바카라사이트 inquiry.
