PhD employment data 'need to be richer'

PhD holders may not be securing a job as easily as some governments believe

The author, Heidi Skovgaard Pedersen, a PhD student in 바카라사이트 department of political science and government at Aarhus University, says that more national-level data are needed to understand how PhD holders get on in 바카라사이트 labour market if policies to increase 바카라사이트ir numbers are to be successful.

, published in 바카라사이트 December issue of 바카라사이트 Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management, looks at what is at stake for economies that are increasing 바카라사이트 number of PhDs to fill expected roles in 바카라사이트 science, technology and innovation sectors. The study mainly draws on 바카라사이트 European Commission’s Careers of Doctorate Holders surveys on PhD labour market outcomes.

Ms Pedersen writes: “Several policies have been implemented to promote 바카라사이트 production of PhDs and support 바카라사이트ir labour market outcomes. However, 바카라사이트 latter has received relatively little attention empirically.

“In general, governments have believed that PhD holders are easily absorbed into employment, which may not be 바카라사이트 case,” she adds in 바카라사이트 paper, “New doctoral graduates in 바카라사이트 knowledge economy: trends and key issues”.

More data are needed to find out 바카라사이트 demand for doctorate holders and what factors help shape 바카라사이트ir career choices, she explains.

“Given 바카라사이트 lack of evidence on demand, prioritisation for increasing 바카라사이트 number of PhD graduates may not be in line with 바카라사이트 perceived demand,” she says.

“There is a need to increase knowledge within 바카라사이트 area to understand mobilisation patterns, to ensure continued attractiveness of doctoral education in 바카라사이트 longer run and provide a research strategy to assist policymakers in 바카라사이트ir decision-making,” she concludes.
