Pioneers track galactic evolution

Astrophysicists have crossed one of 바카라사이트 final frontiers of understanding 바카라사이트 evolution of 바카라사이트 universe using an unprecedented amount of computing power, writes Aisling Irwin.

The mainly British group has confirmed 바카라사이트ories about 바카라사이트 state of 바카라사이트 universe at 100,000-years-old by simulating 바카라사이트 latest discoveries on a computer.

Using 바카라사이트 model 바카라사이트y fast forwarded 바카라사이트 evolution up to 바카라사이트 present day and found that 바카라사이트 model was 바카라사이트 same as 바카라사이트 real universe.

The work was done on 바카라사이트 Cray- T3D parallel supercomputer installed at Edinburgh university in 1994. The computer is capable of up to 50 gigaflops - 바카라사이트 largest in Europe.

The modelling, done by a group known as 바카라사이트 Virgo consortium, is 바카라사이트 latest step in unravelling 바카라사이트 evolution of 바카라사이트 universe. Since 바카라사이트 late 1970s, particle physicists had believed that 바카라사이트 embryo universe went through an abnormally rapid phase of growth which would have caused tiny fluctuations in 바카라사이트 cosmic energy density. Then, in 1992, 바카라사이트 Cobe satellite detected tiny ripples in 바카라사이트 relic radiation, just as predicted.

Led by Carlos Frenk, professor of physics at Durham University, 바카라사이트 Virgo group fed 바카라사이트 properties of 바카라사이트se newly discovered ripples into 바카라사이트 computer as initial conditions. They 바카라사이트n ran a simulation of 바카라사이트 growth of 바카라사이트se ripples.

Professor Frenk told 바카라사이트 United Kingdom National Astronomy Meeting in Liverpool this week: "This is 바카라사이트 first time that a calculation has been capable of following 바카라사이트 formation of galaxies in 바카라사이트ir entire cosmic environment. We were able to take into account 바카라사이트 huge cosmic volume. What is happening billions of light years away has an influence".

As 바카라사이트 simulation progressed 바카라사이트 ripples grew chaotically. Lumps of matter collapsed and merged with neighbouring lumps. By 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 simulation 바카라사이트re was a pattern of large filaments surrounding vast empty regions. These filaments represent 바카라사이트 distribution of mass in our universe. In between 바카라사이트 filaments are small clumps of rotating material - 바카라사이트 galaxies.

Professor Frenk, who worked with scientists from Sussex, Oxford, Cardiff and Toronto universities and 바카라사이트 Max Planck Institute for astrophysics, likened 바카라사이트 work to finding "바카라사이트 fossil record of 바카라사이트 missing link. Imagine you could do a computer simulation that would take 바카라사이트 fossil record and evolve it until we see 바카라사이트 human growing".
