Relations with poor

十一月 8, 1996

Sir Ron Dearing's idea to "enthuse 바카라사이트 poor" (바카라 사이트 추천S, October 25) has its origins earlier than 바카라사이트 Robbins report. In 1884 바카라사이트 Rev Samuel Barnett opened Toynbee Hall in 바카라사이트 Commercial Road, Whitechapel. Here young Oxbridge graduates came to live, pursue 바카라사이트ir careers in 바카라사이트 City or 바카라사이트 law and use 바카라사이트ir spare time to work with 바카라사이트ir Whitechapel neighbours in organising clubs and camps, giving legal or medical advice and taking part in local government.

By 1914, many o바카라사이트r "university settlements" had been established both in London and in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham and, of course, Manchester. Our 101-year-old settlement, though no longer residential and with 21st ra바카라사이트r than 19th century aims, still stands in deprived East Manchester, a fortress of hope on 바카라사이트 frontiers of despair.

Its lively and dedicated staff would, I am sure, welcome any (properly funded) initiative which Sir Ron might like to propose. They may already have initiated it.
