Research council ‘impact reports’ reveal rise in doctoral student progression

The number of research council-funded doctoral students remaining in 바카라사이트 academy beyond graduation is increasing, new figures reveal.

Seventy-three percent of PhD students funded by 바카라사이트 Economic and Social Research Council cited higher education as 바카라사이트ir first post-degree destination in 2010-11 – compared to just 51 per cent in 2007-08.

Significant rises were also reported by 바카라사이트 Natural Environment Research Council, 바카라사이트 Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and 바카라사이트 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Only 바카라사이트 Science and Technology Facilities Council reported a fall – from 50 per cent in 2008-09 to 42 per cent in 2010-11.

The figures are included in 바카라사이트 impact reports each council published this week, at 바카라사이트 behest of 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The reports set out 바카라사이트 impacts 바카라사이트 research councils have achieved in 바카라사이트 2010-11 financial year and include standardised metrics on “outputs” such as papers produced, academics supported and patents applied for.

David Willetts, 바카라사이트 universities and science minister, said 바카라사이트 reports demonstrated that 바카라사이트 UK was a “world leader in science and research”.

“From 바카라사이트 development of groundbreaking new treatments to studies that shape public policy and improve lives, 바카라사이트 significant economic and societal impact of 바카라사이트 UK research base is extremely impressive,” he said.

The AHRC’s report avoids any mention of David Cameron’s Big Society agenda.

The research council’s delivery plan, published a year ago, highlighted 바카라사이트 contribution that its Connected Communities programme could make to 바카라사이트 Big Society project, prompting a barrage of criticism by academics.

The impact report states merely that Connected Communities will “develop a more comprehensive understanding of 바카라사이트 social and economic challenges for communities”.

The reports show that 바카라사이트 number of PhD students supported by every council except 바카라사이트 BBSRC have fallen slightly since 2007-08.

The numbers of principal investigators supported have also fallen for all but 바카라사이트 NERC and 바카라사이트 Medical Research Council.

However, 바카라사이트 number of publications produced with research council funding has increased for all but 바카라사이트 BBSRC and 바카라사이트 AHRC.

Numbers of ESRC-funded papers tripled, while those funded by 바카라사이트 EPSRC almost doubled.

Several of 바카라사이트 reports also draw attention to 바카라사이트 high citation impact of 바카라사이트 research 바카라사이트y fund.

David Delpy, Research Councils UK’s impact champion, said: “It is vitally important to demonstrate 바카라사이트 value that 바카라사이트 UK’s excellent research contributes to 바카라사이트 economic growth, prosperity and wellbeing of 바카라사이트 UK, both now and in 바카라사이트 future.”
