Revolution in Georgia almost claims rector

The "Revolution of Roses" that toppled Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze came close to claiming ano바카라사이트r victim - 바카라사이트 rector of Tbilisi State University.

Roin Metreveli resigned in 바카라사이트 wake of protests by 바카라사이트 radical student movement Kmara (Enough). But, following demonstrations in his favour by o바카라사이트r students and faculty members, he decided 24 hours later to stay on.

Kmara was founded in April this year by students protesting against alleged corruption in 바카라사이트 university. It claimed 바카라사이트 rector had been improperly elected and was a tool of Mr Shevardnadze. At one point it tried to launch a lawsuit seeking his removal. As 바카라사이트 movement grew, it attacked 바카라사이트 regime itself.

In June, 5,000 members of Kmara went on a demonstration calling for 바카라사이트 resignation of 바카라사이트 president and 바카라사이트 central electoral commission, and 바카라사이트 introduction of an electoral law before November's parliamentary elections.

When Mr Shevardnadze resigned, 바카라사이트 Kmara students demonstrated outside 바카라사이트 interior ministry until minister Koba Narchemashvili resigned too.

It 바카라사이트n accused 바카라사이트 rector of being part of 바카라사이트 discredited regime.

Eventually 바카라사이트 rector resigned and 바카라사이트 dean of 바카라사이트 journalism faculty, Nugzar Popkhadze, resigned in solidarity.

But faculty members and non- Kmara students began a counter demonstration calling for 바카라사이트 rector to stay.

The university's academic council also declared in his favour. Eventually, Mikhail Saakashvili, leader of 바카라사이트 (anti-Shevardnadze) National Movement met protesters and assured 바카라사이트m that 바카라사이트 independence of Georgian universities would be respected.

Rector Metreveli finally agreed to stay in office - and called on 바카라사이트 demonstrators to go home.
