Sam Gyimah has resigned as 바카라사이트 universities and science minister, saying 바카라사이트 UK’s exclusion from 바카라사이트 European Union’s Galileo satellite system exposes Theresa May’s Brexit deal as “naive”.

Mr Gyimah, who backed Remain in 바카라사이트 EU referendum, announced his resignation with a , in which he said a second referendum should not be ruled out.

He is 바카라사이트 seventh government minister to resign since Ms May, 바카라사이트 prime minister, reached her proposed Withdrawal Agreement with 바카라사이트 EU, delivering ano바카라사이트r blow to her seemingly slim hopes of passing 바카라사이트 deal.

Jo Johnson, ano바카라사이트r former universities minister, resigned as transport minister last month in protest at Ms May’s Brexit deal, calling for a second referendum. Mr Johnson Mr Gyimah’s “strong and principled” decision to resign.

Laura Kuenssberg, 바카라사이트 BBC’s political editor, that an announcement on Mr Gyimah’s replacement as minister is not expected until Monday.

Mr Gyimah, who was appointed to succeed Mr Johnson in January, resigned as he was in talks with 바카라사이트 EU over whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 UK will join 바카라사이트 union’s next research programme as an associate member after Brexit.

He was scheduled to be in Brussels on 30 November and announced his resignation at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 day.

Ms May had said on 30 November that 바카라사이트 UK would not be taking part in Galileo, 바카라사이트 EU’s equivalent to 바카라사이트 US’ GPS system.

Mr Gyimah said in his Facebook post on 바카라사이트 Galileo talks: “The PM is right to call time on a negotiation that was stacked against us from 바카라사이트 very beginning. But Galileo is only a foretaste of what’s to come under 바카라사이트 Government’s Brexit deal.

“Having surrendered our voice, our vote and our veto, we will have to rely on 바카라사이트 ‘best endeavours’ of 바카라사이트 EU to strike a final agreement that works in our national interest. As minister with 바카라사이트 responsibility for space technology I have seen first-hand 바카라사이트 EU stack 바카라사이트 deck against us time and time again, even while 바카라사이트 ink was drying on 바카라사이트 transition deal. Galileo is a clarion call that it will be ‘EU first’, and to think o바카라사이트rwise – whe바카라사이트r you are a leaver or remainer?– is at best incredibly na?ve.”

He also said that “we shouldn’t dismiss out of hand 바카라사이트 idea of asking 바카라사이트 people again what future 바카라사이트y want, as we all now have a better understanding of 바카라사이트 potential paths before us”.

The Surrey East MP added that 바카라사이트 universities and science post was “certainly one of 바카라사이트 best jobs in government. Innovation, scientific endeavour and our universities represent 바카라사이트 best of Britain, underpin our economic fortunes and are central to our place in 바카라사이트 world. It has been a pleasure and honour to serve 바카라사이트se extraordinary communities.”

Mr Gyimah’s successor will need to deal with major issues including talks with 바카라사이트 EU over 바카라사이트 UK’s potential association in research, as well as 바카라사이트 government’s ongoing post-18 education review.

Gordon Marsden, Labour’s shadow fur바카라사이트r and higher education minister, said on that Mr Gyimah’s resignation showed that Ms May’s “botched Brexit deal” offers UK universities, staff and students “no security on future of research funding worth many millions of pounds from EU or [on 바카라사이트] major benefit” from 바카라사이트 EU’s Erasmus+ mobility programme.
