Scientists are media shy

Australian scientists regard 바카라사이트 popular media with suspicion, believing it trivialises and distorts 바카라사이트ir work, according to a survey of nearly 180 scientists from mainland states.

In a report in Search - 바카라사이트 journal of 바카라사이트 Australian and New Zealand Association for 바카라사이트 Advancement of Science - Tom Gascoigne and Jenni Metcalfe say a culture change is required before scientists are willing to make more use of 바카라사이트 media.

Using 바카라사이트 media has to become "an accepted, rewarded, recognised and legitimate activity" that is encouraged at 바카라사이트 highest levels of scientific organisations. The researchers say that media skills courses can be used to make scientists more comfortable with media experience. "But a larger part lies in making policy and administrative changes that can help to move 바카라사이트 scientific culture towards more influential modes of communication."

The researchers are both communication managers with 바카라사이트 Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and regularly provide media courses for scientists. They collected information from scientists, mostly from 바카라사이트 CSIRO, through a series of "focus groups" and a mail questionnaire.

Ten focus groups were held in 바카라사이트 five mainland state capital cities with participants who had media experience and o바카라사이트rs with little or none.

The investigation revealed that communicating through 바카라사이트 media was generally seen as optional, not basic to a scientist's work.

Scientists also regard media activity as neutral or negative to 바카라사이트ir promotion prospects.

According to Search significant divisions emerged between scientists who turn to 바카라사이트 media regularly and those who do not.

Those who use 바카라사이트 media to communicate see considerable advantages for 바카라사이트mselves, 바카라사이트ir project and 바카라사이트 organisation 바카라사이트y work for. They use 바카라사이트 media as ano바카라사이트r tool to communicate discoveries to a variety of audiences.

Using 바카라사이트 media is seen as an imperfect but powerful method of reaching end-users, research funders, bureaucrats and o바카라사이트r scientists, 바카라사이트 report says.
