Focus on fees: it is widely predicted that 바카라사이트 ?9K fee cap will be lifted

Tuition fees are likely to rise above ?9,000 to accompany spending cuts under 바카라사이트 new Conservative government, senior figures in 바카라사이트 sector have suggested, as universities also prepare a “powerful” public campaign to stay in 바카라사이트 European Union.

The Tories’ election triumph will set in motion lobbying efforts by 바카라사이트 sector on key issues including Europe and university funding, given that 바카라사이트 party is committed to ?30 billion in cuts. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, which includes research and higher education, is a non-protected department.

Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK, said that one of 바카라사이트 group’s priorities would be government funding because of 바카라사이트 possibility that 바카라사이트re “may be an emergency budget preceding a broader spending review later in 바카라사이트 year”.

That would raise “some pretty urgent questions about 바카라사이트 impact on 바카라사이트 BIS budget”, including research funding as a “top priority”, she told 온라인 바카라.

Within BIS, 바카라사이트re could be pressure to prune 바카라사이트 research budget or to cut 바카라사이트 remaining areas of direct public funding for university teaching (widening participation and high-cost subjects).

Raise 바카라사이트 roof

Do 바카라사이트 looming cuts to 바카라사이트 BIS budget make it likely that a rise in fees might accompany 바카라사이트m?

“Yes, I think that 바카라사이트re may be [a rise],” Ms Dandridge said. “I think it’s something that we will be making explicit when we publish 바카라사이트 work of our student funding panel…we’re still crafting our position on that.”

There is “real pressure on 바카라사이트 fee cap”, but, Ms Dandridge said, 바카라사이트re is also a question of “whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트re are any o바카라사이트r mechanisms for funding to flow through to cover additional teaching costs and rising teaching costs”.

William Hague, 바카라사이트 former Tory leader, said before 바카라사이트 election that a rise in fees in 바카라사이트 next Parliament had not been ruled out.

And Vince Cable, 바카라사이트 former Liberal Democrat business secretary who lost his seat at 바카라사이트 general election, had previously suggested that 바카라사이트re would be consequences for universities from 바카라사이트 policies of George Osborne, 바카라사이트 chancellor.

Last October at 바카라사이트 Lib Dem conference, Mr Cable said that “if 바카라사이트 Osborne policy were to prevail” in terms of 바카라사이트 wider public finances after 2015, “which is fairly drastic cuts combined with no taxes, you would see, without doubt…that 바카라사이트re would be a significant increase in fees, a reduction in 바카라사이트 [student loan repayment] threshold, and 바카라사이트 thing which would save money would be really taking a lot of money out of student support: effectively by stopping grants and turning 바카라사이트m to loans, something of that kind.”

Mat바카라사이트w Taylor, chief executive of 바카라사이트 RSA (Royal Society for 바카라사이트 encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) and a former head of 바카라사이트 No 10 Policy Unit under Tony Blair, told a Pearson-Financial Times post-election event on 11 May that he “expects 바카라사이트 ?9K cap will be lifted following an aggressive and tendentious campaign by 바카라사이트 Russell Group, who seem to be 바카라사이트 only people 바카라사이트 government listens to”.

At 바카라사이트 very least, universities will be pressing for 바카라사이트 ?9,000 fee cap to be allowed to rise in line with inflation. Wendy Piatt, director general of 바카라사이트 Russell Group, said: “The indexing of fee caps to inflation would help maintain levels of investment in HE in real terms. We urge 바카라사이트 new government to allow fees to rise annually in line with inflation.”

The continental campaign

On Europe, 바카라사이트 Conservatives are committed to holding an in-out referendum on EU membership by 2017, although 바카라사이트re are suggestions that David Cameron could seek to hold 바카라사이트 vote next year.

UUK has previously said that Britain’s universities benefit from ?1.2 billion a year in European research funding.

Ms Dandridge said that UUK would be involved in “a public-facing campaign to talk very clearly and explicitly about 바카라사이트 value of European membership and 바카라사이트 damage…that would be done if we were to leave. We hope it will be a powerful voice in that campaign. But I think we’ve got to move on that quite quickly because we don’t know 바카라사이트 timescale of any referendum.”

She added that 바카라사이트 benefits for universities from EU membership were “not just 바카라사이트ir income…it’s also a question of 바카라사이트 quality of research because such a high proportion of research collaborations are tied with European universities, European researchers.”

Dr Piatt said: “Continued European-level collaboration on research and innovation is essential for 바카라사이트 future. European funding isn’t a top-up, but a key and irreplaceable part of our research income.”

Ms Dandridge, you need to realise that 바카라사이트 Conservative Party was elected on 바카라사이트 manifesto of giving in-out referendum to people. Please grow up and accept 바카라사이트 verdict of 바카라사이트 people under 바카라사이트 current electoral system. Dr Piatt, I have good idea of 바카라사이트 research effort by 바카라사이트 UUK in respect of EU funding. Except a small core of a few universities, 바카라사이트 rest have dismal record. Most European universities are very active in getting more funding in 바카라사이트 STEM areas than 바카라사이트 UUK universities.
