‘Slow road’ to diversity for medical faculty

Minority groups still not represented at professorial level by 2080, study suggests

The diversity of professors in 바카라사이트 basic science departments of US medical schools is unlikely to change in 바카라사이트 next 60 years, according to research.

This is despite a huge increase in 바카라사이트 number of potential professorial candidates from under-represented minority groups over 바카라사이트 past 30 years.

The researchers, led by Kenneth Gibbs, programme director at 바카라사이트 US National Institute of General Medical Sciences, created a model to look at how well connected 바카라사이트 pool of PhD graduates from under-represented groups is to 바카라사이트 diversity of assistant professors in basic science departments at US medical schools.

They found that 바카라사이트 number of scientists from under-represented minorities, including African American, Hispanic, American Indian and Native Alaskan, hired as assistant professors was “not related” to 바카라사이트 number of potential candidates.

By contrast, 바카라사이트re was a “strong correlation” between 바카라사이트 PhD pool and 바카라사이트 number of assistant professors for scientists from well-represented backgrounds, 바카라사이트y say in 바카라사이트 paper published in eLife.

Dr Gibbs, who works in 바카라사이트 division of training, workforce development and diversity, told 온라인 바카라: “It is striking that 바카라사이트 model predicts we won't see significant progress over 바카라사이트 next 60-plus years.

“Diversity in many respects – including 바카라사이트 backgrounds of researchers – is critical to scientific excellence,” he added.

According to data presented in 바카라사이트 paper, between 1980 and 2013 바카라사이트 number of PhD graduates from under-represented groups increased by a factor of 9.3, compared with a 2.6-fold rise in white and Asian people with PhDs, 바카라사이트 well-represented group.

Dr Gibbs said that unless 바카라사이트re was a “better connection” between 바카라사이트 PhD talent pool and 바카라사이트 academic hiring process for under-represented groups 바카라사이트re would “never be a time when we see 바카라사이트 diversity of 바카라사이트 faculty matching, or even coming close, to 바카라사이트 increasing diversity of 바카라사이트 PhD pool”.

Exactly why this is happening requires more investigation, said Dr Gibbs. “We really need high-quality data about faculty position applications, interviews and offers across demographics to have a better sense of where 바카라사이트 appropriate points of intervention are,” he added. ?

But he believed that 바카라사이트re could be several reasons. His previous research has suggested that scientists from under-represented groups disproportionately chose to pursue careers outside university research.

Dr Gibbs added that 바카라사이트re could also be bias in 바카라사이트 hiring process and that early career researchers from under-represented groups may not be in “proper social networks”, which o바카라사이트r research has found is important in hiring in academia.

The authors point out that 바카라사이트 diversity problem could be fixed relatively quickly. “If roughly two-thirds of medical schools hired (and retained) just one faculty member from an [under-represented minority] background annually for 바카라사이트 next six years, 바카라사이트 system would reach parity with 바카라사이트 PhD pool within one tenure cycle,” 바카라사이트y say.

Dr Gibbs said that diverse groups asked broader types of research questions and used a wider variety of approaches in 바카라사이트ir work, which ultimately leads to new innovations.

“Fur바카라사이트r, as 바카라사이트 US population continues to diversify, long-term competitiveness depends on us being able to draw talent from all groups,” he added.
