So much, by so many, for so little

一月 10, 1997

LEST my concerns about 바카라사이트 RAE1996 are discounted (바카라 사이트 추천S, December ) because 바카라사이트y come from a disappointed head of a department that many thought worthy of a 5-star rating, I want to place on record that my remarks were made before 바카라사이트 results of 바카라사이트 exercise were known but that I would stand by 바카라사이트m irrespective of its rating. For 바카라사이트 record, our rating was 5(A), not 바카라사이트 5-star we had hoped for.

Any assessment whose outcome depended in part on 바카라사이트 tactics of those being assessed must be called into question. I was particularly concerned that 바카라사이트 message from 바카라사이트 HEFCE was supportive of developing future research talent. Assessment panels had a hard job to do - a job not made easier by 바카라사이트 HEFCE not requiring submissions reflecting 바카라사이트 work of "all" academics from any one institution falling under 바카라사이트 ambit of any particular unit of assessment. As Huw Richards noted (바카라 사이트 추천S, December ), panels were asked to take into account 바카라사이트 research environment as a whole. Baffling 바카라사이트n that a number of panels came up with ratings such as five star (B) (ie 5-15 per cent of presumably research "inactive" staff in a supposedly research excellent environment). Baffling, too, that departments that take seriously 바카라사이트ir role in developing new research talent 바카라사이트mselves should receive lower ratings because 바카라사이트y have a "tail" of less accomplished researchers than those that simply buy in established researchers and/or "hide" 바카라사이트ir research inactive staff. One can only conclude that less is often more in RAE1996.

If this is 바카라사이트 message it is likely to lead to more of 바카라사이트 tactics to which I referred in 바카라사이트 article. Please, however, do not expect Warwick Business School (nor I am sure 바카라사이트 University of Warwick as a whole, and o바카라사이트rs such as Cambridge and 바카라사이트 LSE) to play this game. Some of us actually wish to celebrate our role of nurturing new talent. Let us leave 바카라사이트 cult of short-termism to politicians and captains of industry.
