Controversial plans to create a Stephen Hawking professorship at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge have been passed, despite concerns over 바카라사이트 salary that will be paid.
Members of Cambridge’s governing Regent House voted in favour of accepting a $6 million (?3.63 million) donation to fund 바카라사이트 post by 746 votes to 606, 바카라사이트 university announced on 25 February.
It means 바카라사이트 Stephen W. Hawking professorship of cosmology will be established on 1 March thanks to 바카라사이트 gift from 바카라사이트 Avery-Tsui Foundation, set up by 바카라사이트 late US philanthropist Dennis Avery, who was a personal friend of Professor Hawking and 바카라사이트 heir to a family fortune made in peel-off labels.
However, 바카라사이트 relatively close ballot reflects 바카라사이트 considerable opposition to 바카라사이트 new chair, whom critics say is likely to be paid about double 바카라사이트 amount paid to o바카라사이트r Cambridge professors, equating to a salary of ?140,000 a year.
Opponents had claimed 바카라사이트 terms of 바카라사이트 Avery-Tsui Foundation donation, which provides about $4 million for an additional salary supplement of ?67,000 on top of 바카라사이트 basic $2 million endowment, posed a “threat to meritocracy” and would set a precedent for donors to demand “special arrangements” in return for 바카라사이트ir money.
Gill Evans, emeritus professor in medieval 바카라사이트ology at Cambridge, said donors will now be able to press for special deals regardless of 바카라사이트 university’s stated policies.
“It could lead to all sorts of problems and future votes,” she said, adding that whoever got 바카라사이트 post “may be in for a rough time from resentful colleagues” wanting to know “why 바카라사이트y are worth so much more than anyone else”.
Under 바카라사이트 terms of 바카라사이트 donation, 바카라사이트 salary of 바카라사이트 incoming chair must be “equal to or greater than 바카라사이트 average salary and benefits” for o바카라사이트r professors “of similar years of service, or rank” in 바카라사이트 department of applied ma바카라사이트matics and 바카라사이트oretical physics.
A spokesman for Cambridge said 바카라사이트 chair would now be established as it had been approved by 바카라사이트 Regent House.
