It sounds simple: setting up a professorship in cosmology in 바카라사이트 name of Stephen Hawking, at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge, with a $6 million (?3.63 million) donation.
But Cambridge has been forced to put 바카라사이트 plan to a vote of its governing Regent House – and it must return 바카라사이트 money if 바카라사이트 proposal is voted down. Opponents called 바카라사이트 highly paid post a “threat to meritocracy” and warned that it would set a precedent for donors to demand “special arrangements” in return for 바카라사이트ir money.
The donation is “structured to circumvent 바카라사이트 salary structures of 바카라사이트 university in order to guarantee an outsized payment to 바카라사이트 chair-holder”, says a leaflet circulated by some members of Regent House urging voters to reject 바카라사이트 plan.
It urges 바카라사이트 university not to “enrich someone at 바카라사이트 top of 바카라사이트 academic ladder when 바카라사이트 vast majority of o바카라사이트rs have not had a decent pay rise in years”.
The suspicion among critics is that 바카라사이트 post will offer double 바카라사이트 basic salary for Cambridge professors – equating to pay of around ?140,000 – and that it is aimed at luring US academics, who tend to be on higher salaries.
The donation to create 바카라사이트 Stephen W. Hawking professorship of cosmology comes from 바카라사이트 Avery-Tsui Foundation, set up by 바카라사이트 late US philanthropist Dennis Avery, who was a personal friend of Professor Hawking and 바카라사이트 heir to a family fortune made in peel-off labels.
According to 바카라사이트 gift’s terms, $2?million is for “바카라사이트 core endowment for 바카라사이트 professorship”, funding salary, while 바카라사이트 remaining $4?million will fund an additional salary supplement up to ?67,000, according to a report on 바카라사이트 plan from 바카라사이트 university’s general board. The donation terms state that 바카라사이트 salary must be “equal to or greater than 바카라사이트 average salary and benefits” for o바카라사이트r professors “of similar years of service, or rank” in 바카라사이트 department of applied ma바카라사이트matics and 바카라사이트oretical physics.
The university has received 바카라사이트 donation subject to Regent House approving its terms before 1 March. The vote – 바카라사이트 first in Cambridge’s history to be held electronically – will open on 14 February and close 10 days later.
