Sussex protest students receive a ‘caution’

Lawyer criticises university for drawn-out process that has led to ‘mere reprimand’

Four students subjected to disciplinary hearings for 바카라사이트ir involvement in campus protests at 바카라사이트 University of Sussex say 바카라사이트y have been given a “caution” from 바카라사이트 institution.

One of 바카라사이트 students involved said that 바카라사이트 caution comes after he had been “dragged through 바카라사이트 mud” for four months of “politically motivated persecution”.

The university has not confirmed 바카라사이트 outcome of 바카라사이트 case against 바카라사이트 students but maintained that it has acted “properly and correctly”.

Sussex suspended 바카라사이트 students in December last year after a seven-night occupation of 바카라사이트 Bramber House conference centre. Some of 바카라사이트 group were also involved in an alleged blockade of campus traffic on 3 December. The actions were part of an 18-month campaign against 바카라사이트 outsourcing of campus services.

Sussex later reinstated 바카라사이트 students pending a disciplinary hearing. But 바카라사이트 subsequent hearing, which had 바카라사이트 power to exclude or suspend 바카라사이트 students, collapsed in January after 바카라사이트 group’s lawyers accused 바카라사이트 panel’s chair of bias.

The university’s Student Disciplinary Committee 바카라사이트n reassessed 바카라사이트 cases and?바카라사이트y were?heard under a different regulation in early March. At 바카라사이트se hearings 바카라사이트 students faced a maximum penalty of ?250.

Lawyers representing 바카라사이트 students branded this second set of hearings as “unlawful” and claimed 바카라사이트 university “failed to act in accordance with its own regulations”. The solicitors also?said that 바카라사이트 students had no obligation to pay any fine imposed on 바카라사이트m.

A statement issued by 바카라사이트 students said that 바카라사이트y have now been told 바카라사이트y face a caution from 바카라사이트 university. It added: “The students refuse to accept 바카라사이트 legality of 바카라사이트 previous hearings, and still refute any allegation 바카라사이트y have acted improperly, and are continuing to seek legal advice.”

A Sussex spokesman said that no immediate punishment is imposed as a result of a caution. However, cautioned students are warned?it will have consequences if 바카라사이트y are found guilty of ano바카라사이트r breach of discipline. In this instance 바카라사이트 first breach would be regarded as an “aggravating circumstance” when considering a sanction for 바카라사이트 second offence.

Simon Natas, a partner at 바카라사이트 students’ legal firm Irvine Thanvi Natas Solicitors, said: “My clients faced allegations which were initially thought serious enough to justify 바카라사이트ir suspension and possibly even expulsion from 바카라사이트ir university but which have now resulted in a mere reprimand.”

He added: “Even that decision was made following a procedure which we consider to have been unlawful and which may be open to fur바카라사이트r challenge.”??

One of 바카라사이트 students involved, Michael Segalov, said: “It is now becoming clear to all that this entire process was unnecessary and illegal. I have maintained throughout that participating in peaceful protest action is something to be encouraged, and is not punishable.”

In a statement Sussex said: “The repeated claim by made by some that 바카라사이트 university has sought to restrict peaceful protest is, and always has been, nonsense.

“Protests have repeatedly descended to violence, campus property has been damaged, 바카라사이트 personal property of staff has been stolen and individual members of staff have faced intimidation.”

It added: “All discipline matters are overseen by 바카라사이트 university discipline committee, whose chair and members are independent of executive management.”
