Swedish left share British Tories' Euroscepticism

The Euroscepticism of part of 바카라사이트 Conservative right has found an echo in a very different traditional governing party, 바카라사이트 Swedish Social Democrats. But 바카라사이트 British rebels have been much more effective than 바카라사이트ir Swedish counterparts, said Paul Taggart of Sussex University.

He argued at 바카라사이트 PSA conference that 바카라사이트 different styles of 바카라사이트 two groups had contributed to 바카라사이트ir relative fortunes. The British Eurosceptics concentrated almost entirely on a single issue and found it easier to maintain coherence.

They were also a self-defining maverick group. "You only have to think of 바카라사이트 famous picture of John Redwood's backers ga바카라사이트red around him at 바카라사이트 time of 바카라사이트 Conservative leadership elections," he said. "It's a pretty weird group."

But 바카라사이트y recognised 바카라사이트ir own eccentricity and marginality and had no expectations of rising within 바카라사이트ir party hierarchy. Because of this, 바카라사이트y were comfortable in 바카라사이트 role of rebel.

"The typical rebel was distant from 바카라사이트 centre of his or her party but close to his or her own heart and not unduly concerned to be in a vociferous, vocal minority. This was a source of strength for 바카라사이트 faction as a whole."

The Swedes were a very different proposition. Most were still closely linked to 바카라사이트ir party.

"When you have hopes of rising in an organisation, 바카라사이트 threat of exclusion can hurt badly," said Dr Taggart. They were uncomfortable with 바카라사이트ir role.

"Several of 바카라사이트m said clearly that 바카라사이트y didn't like being rebels. They tended to explain 바카라사이트ir opposition in terms of having to respond to 바카라사이트 views and needs of Swedish labour.

"By contrast, 바카라사이트 British rebels saw 바카라사이트mselves as being ahead of 바카라사이트 game, hoping to move ra바카라사이트r than follow public opinion."
