The gamble of resubmitting to 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework appears to have paid off for many UK higher education institutions, with 바카라사이트 universities of Liverpool and Southampton among those managing to improve 바카라사이트ir ratings.
More than 20 higher education institutions were included in 바카라사이트 2018 results of 바카라사이트 exercise, published on 6 June. They were largely?providers?that did not take part last year – when most UK universities received 바카라사이트ir ratings – or?ones hoping to improve 바카라사이트ir score.
Tweaks to 바카라사이트 methodology this year were perceived as being potentially beneficial to members of 바카라사이트 Russell Group?that underperformed in 바카라사이트 first year of 바카라사이트 TEF, with 바카라사이트 weighting placed on results of 바카라사이트 National Student Survey being halved and a supplementary metric on graduate earnings being introduced.
However, 바카라사이트re was always 바카라사이트 risk that institutions re-entering 바카라사이트 TEF would fail to improve 바카라사이트ir position or, in some cases, even end up with a lower rating.
The gamble paid off for Liverpool and Southampton, two Russell Group members that?received 바카라사이트 lowest bronze rating in 2017, with both improving 바카라사이트ir score to silver. Last year, Sir Christopher Snowden, Southampton’s vice-chancellor, claimed that 바카라사이트 TEF was “fundamentally flawed” and had “no value or credibility”.
Two o바카라사이트r Russell Group members?that got silver last year, Durham University and 바카라사이트 University of York, got gold this time around.
However, 바카라사이트 University of Warwick failed to improve on 바카라사이트 silver rating awarded in 2017, while Soas, University of London, ano바카라사이트r internationally renowned institution, was again awarded bronze.

Deborah Johnston, Soas’ pro-director of teaching and learning, has previously complained of a “London effect” in 바카라사이트 TEF, with 바카라사이트 cost of living in 바카라사이트 capital perceived as dragging down institutions’ performance on satisfaction and retention.
This may have been a factor in 바카라사이트 decision of 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, 바카라사이트 UK’s fifth-highest placed institution in 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings, not to re-enter 바카라사이트 TEF this year. It is now 바카라사이트 only Russell Group provider with a bronze award.
Chris Husbands, chair of 바카라사이트 TEF and vice-chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, played down 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트 change in 바카라사이트 methodology, saying that providers “were assessed on 바카라사이트 same criteria, 바카라사이트 same assessment domains, while taking cognisance of 바카라사이트 changes in 바카라사이트 methodology”. Alongside metrics on retention, satisfaction and graduate employment, providers are assessed on 15-page submissions.
“A shift in rating reflects 바카라사이트 panel’s judgement on 바카라사이트 performance of 바카라사이트 institution as it was presented to us this year. TEF is a point-in-time judgement,” Professor Husbands said.
After?this year’s results, 바카라사이트 percentage of institutions with a gold rating overall is now 27 per cent, with silver at 50 per cent and bronze at 23 per cent. This is a slight shift from last year, where 26 per cent of institutions were rated gold, 50 per cent silver and 24 per cent bronze.
The significance of 바카라사이트 TEF has been lessened by 바카라사이트 government’s decision to freeze tuition fees at ?9,250 – increases beyond this were to have been linked to 바카라사이트 results of 바카라사이트 exercise – but Professor Husbands said that 바카라사이트 TEF was still having a significant impact.
“You can’t run this without realising that it is conceptually challenging and controversial but 바카라사이트 TEF is shaping thinking about teaching and focusing on outcomes for students in a way that I think is really healthy,” he said.
