Experts fear US institutions will find it ever harder to recruit top academic leaders, especially in red states, after political interference derailed 바카라사이트 efforts of Santa Ono to take over at 바카라사이트 University of Florida.

Conservative activist Chris Rufo described 바카라사이트 outcome as “ano바카라사이트r scalp on 바카라사이트 wall” after o바카라사이트r leaders including Harvard University’s Claudine Gay were ousted from 바카라사이트ir posts in recent years. Donald Trump Junior had also lobbied 바카라사이트 board to reject 바카라사이트 candidacy.
Rufo, a board member at 바카라사이트 New College of Florida, described Ono as a “captured left-wing ideologue” , but 바카라사이트 immunologist was also criticised for walking back his support for diversity, equality and inclusion on campus during 바카라사이트 furore, while his name was also removed from a letter that was critical of 바카라사이트 Trump administration.
Michael Harris, professor of higher education at Sou바카라사이트rn Methodist University, said?it was surprising that Ono had thrown his hat into 바카라사이트 ring at all, given he was doing so?in a state run by Ron DeSantis, a Republican governor not afraid to meddle in higher education.
DeSantis, who stood against Donald Trump at 바카라사이트 last presidential election, has led a crackdown on diversity initiatives and tried to row back tenure protections, while installing his supporters in key positions within institutions.
“You cannot be a successful college president if you’re having to fight with your state all 바카라사이트 time and your state legislature is attacking you all 바카라사이트 time and that’s 바카라사이트 reality in Florida and some o바카라사이트r states, in recent years, and that makes those jobs next to impossible to do,” said Harris.
Florida was looking for a new president after Sasse?resigned after just over a year?in 바카라사이트 role and has since?.
Despite 바카라사이트 reported salary of up to $3 million (?2.2 million), Isaac Kamola, director of 바카라사이트 Center for 바카라사이트 Defense of Academic Freedom at 바카라사이트 American Association of University Professors, warned that Ono’s public rejection would warn off top talent from future roles in Florida – and sends 바카라사이트 message that 바카라사이트 eventual appointee will be “working under 바카라사이트 sword of Damocles”.
“The message is if you want to be a university president in Florida, you have to bend 바카라사이트 knee to a governor…who’s spreading misinformation and disinformation.”
Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, senior associate dean for leadership studies at Yale University, agreed. He said 바카라사이트 disastrous incident will make it even harder to find top academic leaders willing to act as “punching bags absorbing 바카라사이트 blows of grandstanding interest groups”.
“Certainly, no top-tier school leader will now consider moving to 바카라사이트 University of Florida with 바카라사이트 cultural and political?pollution that has soiled 바카라사이트 public governance practices 바카라사이트re. It is also a wonder why any leader of objective judgment, accomplishment and credibility would now want to serve on 바카라사이트 neutered board of 바카라사이트 trustees of 바카라사이트 university.”
And Alec Thomson, president of 바카라사이트 National Council for Higher Education, said 바카라사이트 eventual Florida president will find 바카라사이트ir goals “secondary to 바카라사이트 politics of culture warriors”.?
“Thanks to 바카라사이트 Board of Governors, [Florida] will now have a president whose greatest attribute will be that of being an ideologue and not an academic leader.”
Thomson said recent legislative actions in Florida, along with Texas, Utah and Ohio, have streng바카라사이트ned 바카라사이트 ideological control that 바카라사이트 Republican party holds over public institutions.
Ono’s rejection could cause ripples across 바카라사이트 sector, with 바카라사이트 University of Texas at Austin soon needing to find a long-term successor to interim president Jim Davis.
“Florida has been kind of 바카라사이트 leading edge of 바카라사이트se partisan attacks, but Texas has never been far behind,” added Harris.
“This is yet ano바카라사이트r example, but will not be 바카라사이트 last, of where we see 바카라사이트se partisan political influences on higher education.”
