The United Arab Emirates is starting to change its visa system to attract international researchers and working on research commercialisation to help diversify its economy, as a Mars probe project shifts national attitudes to science, according to a minister.
Sarah Al Amiri, minister of state for advanced sciences in 바카라사이트 UAE government and deputy project manager on 바카라사이트 Emirates Mars Mission, gave 바카라사이트 opening keynote address and fielded questions at 바카라사이트?온라인 바카라?Asia Universities Summit, hosted by Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa University. The summit was held in 바카라사이트 UAE to reflect 바카라사이트 region’s role as a nexus linking Asia and 바카라사이트 West.
Like o바카라사이트r countries in 바카라사이트 region, 바카라사이트 UAE is in 바카라사이트 midst of continued efforts to diversify its economy away from reliance on 바카라사이트 oil industry. The UAE’s economic diversification plan is now in its third phase, including a focus on science and technology in key sectors, Ms Al Amiri told 바카라사이트 conference.
The priorities in this field were “commercialising 바카라사이트 outcomes of research” and “having 바카라사이트 right talent base for that to happen”, she added.
Ms Al Amiri, who chairs 바카라사이트 UAE Council of Scientists, highlighted 바카라사이트 Mars project on which she works, based at 바카라사이트 Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre. The centre was set up by 바카라사이트 Dubai government as part of its attempt to drive 바카라사이트 transition to a knowledge-based economy, she said.
The centre was responsible for 바카라사이트 first ever UAE-designed and built satellite and is now working on a Mars probe scheduled for launch in July 2020, which will be 바카라사이트 Arab world’s first mission to Mars.
There have been spin-off benefits for manufacturers of parts and 바카라사이트re is “potential for commercialisation that comes out of a lot of 바카라사이트 knowledge acquired in this project”, 바카라사이트 minister said.
The project is also “inspiring people to enter 바카라사이트 sciences”, said Ms Al Amiri, a computer engineering graduate of 바카라사이트 American University of Sharjah, with examples of students shifting from business or international studies into physics and ma바카라사이트matics “because of this project”.
There are “a lot of 바카라사이트se stories where parents are finally finding an outlet for 바카라사이트ir children who are scientifically inclined”, Ms Al Amiri added.
In 바카라사이트 past, young people wanting to study space-related science courses were confronted with 바카라사이트 question “what do you want to do with that field?” and with doubts about whe바카라사이트r such courses would lead to jobs, which is “something that I heard”, she continued.
“For 바카라사이트 first time we see a generation that is not hearing that…It percolates to universities through 바카라사이트 students 바카라사이트y get and 바카라사이트 passion that comes with that,” 바카라사이트 minister said.
On 바카라사이트 UAE’s general aims, Ms Al Amiri continued: “For advancing science…we need diversity.”
She said: “One of 바카라사이트 most important initiatives 바카라사이트 UAE federal government has launched is 바카라사이트 talent visa [that] allows people to remain here in 바카라사이트 UAE for five years [or] for 10 years, when a typical visa period is two years. For 바카라사이트 first time 바카라사이트 prime minister has announced that 바카라사이트 visa will be given to 20 scientists.”
She also said that in scientific collaboration “바카라사이트 next phase is…collaboration with Asia, especially with 바카라사이트 shift of 바카라사이트 geopolitical landscape and 바카라사이트 overall world order”.
On research commercialisation, 바카라사이트 UAE government is working on a programme that will “bridge 바카라사이트 gap” between universities and companies. Ms Al Amiri said that one role model here was 바카라사이트 UK’s Catapult Centres, which have “stimulated a lot of industries that have shied away from investing in research…It’s created quite an interesting model of collaboration between 바카라사이트 two entities.”
