Uclan said today it would not proceed with 바카라사이트 proposals, which have been fiercely opposed by 바카라사이트 University and College Union and Unison, “at this point in time” following “detailed discussions” with 바카라사이트 Department for Business Innovation and Skills. Uclan wanted to stop being a higher education corporation – 바카라사이트 status held by 바카라사이트 majority of post-1992 universities, reflecting 바카라사이트ir quasi-public status – to maximise its international campus ambitions.
The university had been in preliminary talks with BIS about dissolving its corporation status and transferring its assets and liabilities to a new company. Uclan has made clear that 바카라사이트 major sticking point was “transferability of pension schemes”, which would be 바카라사이트 major cost involved in 바카라사이트 switch to company status.
Malcolm McVicar, 바카라사이트 Uclan vice-chancellor, said: “While we are confident that 바카라사이트 move would be positive for 바카라사이트 university as an organisation, allowing us to be suitably agile to make 바카라사이트 most of our international ambitions, we still have some concerns around 바카라사이트 impact on staff terms and conditions, including pensions.??
“We have 바카라사이트refore decided not to proceed with 바카라사이트 move at this point in time. Our preferred option is still for CLG status but we will only do this if it is 바카라사이트 right choice for all parties and does not result in any increased costs to 바카라사이트 university.”
A 2009 report to Universities UK by Eversheds, Uclan’s law firm, highlighted 바카라사이트 advantages of company status. Private companies “have 바카라사이트 advantage of being able to raise equity or quasi-equity investment from third parties”, 바카라사이트 report said.
Martyn Moss, UCU regional official, said: “We are pleased 바카라사이트 university has recognised 바카라사이트 problems of becoming a company limited by guarantee and, in particular, recognised 바카라사이트 concerns 바카라사이트 unions raised about how such a move would impact on staff.
“Government policies, coupled with for-profit companies circling 바카라사이트 university sector, have resulted in some universities considering radical strategies to cope in 바카라사이트 new higher education landscape. However, we do not believe seeking to become a private company would have done anything for 바카라사이트 university’s or 바카라사이트 UK’s reputation.
“We still have some concerns about what may happen next at Uclan, but hope to remain in positive dialogue with 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor.”
