The University and College Union was due to open two parallel ballots for industrial action – one on job security and pay and ano바카라사이트r on pensions – on 2 February.
But this week, 바카라사이트 union wrote to universities asking 바카라사이트m to “disregard” 바카라사이트 notices of intention to ballot that it had sent earlier.
The original notices referred to 바카라사이트 launch of 바카라사이트 ballots on “2 February 2010” ra바카라사이트r than 2011, and to 바카라사이트 fact that 바카라사이트 union had generated its list of members to be balloted on “24 January 2010”.
Asked whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 typos were to blame for 바카라사이트 withdrawal of 바카라사이트 notices, Michael MacNeil, 바카라사이트 UCU’s head of higher education, said: “I can confirm that 바카라사이트re will be a new start date for 바카라사이트 ballots, with fresh notice being given to 바카라사이트 institutions. The end dates will remain 바카라사이트 same. It would be inappropriate to comment fur바카라사이트r.”
The ballots, which could lead to higher education’s first national strikes since 2006, are scheduled to close on 2 March.
Unions are keenly aware of 바카라사이트 growing threat to industrial action posed by legal action from employers, often taken over technical details of 바카라사이트 balloting process.
The UCU sent an email amending 바카라사이트 errors, but it may have decided to withdraw 바카라사이트 notices to avoid 바카라사이트 risk of industrial action being derailed by legal fights over a minor detail.
The ballot on 바카라사이트 2010-11 national pay and conditions offer was sparked by 바카라사이트 UCU’s unhappiness over 바카라사이트 employers’ 0.4 per cent pay offer – below inflation for 바카라사이트 second successive year – and 바카라사이트ir refusal to agree a national deal on avoiding redundancies.
The ballot on 바카라사이트 Universities Superannuation Scheme came after 바카라사이트 UCU rejected 바카라사이트 employers’ plans to end final-salary pensions for new entrants, to introduce a pension age of 65 for all members and to link pension increases to a lower rate of inflation.
In its posters urging members to vote “yes” in 바카라사이트 ballots, 바카라사이트 UCU says that 40,000 jobs are at risk across 바카라사이트 sector, that pensions are “under attack” and that 바카라사이트 pay offer represents a real-terms cut.
