UCU warns of top position in a ranking to avoid

According to 바카라사이트 University and College Union, increasing tuition fees to ?5,000 a year would push England into 바카라사이트 top spot in a ranking of 22 members of 바카라사이트 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The analysis published today comes less than a fortnight before Lord Browne’s review panel is due to make its recommendations to 바카라사이트 government.

It is widely expected to suggest raising 바카라사이트 cap on fees, possibly to ?7,000 a year or more.

According to 바카라사이트 UCU analysis, in 2007-08 (바카라사이트 year under scrutiny), six of 바카라사이트 22 OECD countries studied did not charge fees, while 바카라사이트 international average annual fee at public universities was ?1,4.

England, which currently has a fee cap of ?3,290 a year, was 바카라사이트 fourth most expensive country, with only Iceland, Norway and 바카라사이트 US charging more.

In 바카라사이트 US, 바카라사이트 average fee paid by students at public universities was $5,943 a year (?3,572), although students at private institutions paid significantly more – an average of $21,979, according to 바카라사이트 union’s figures.

Sally Hunt, general secretary of 바카라사이트 UCU, said: “England has much to be proud of when it comes to higher education. We are recognised as a leader both in research and teaching and continue to punch considerably above our weight. However, we do not want to be 바카라사이트 most expensive country in 바카라사이트 world for domestic students to do a degree.

“Students have been contributing more and more to 바카라사이트 cost of a degree over recent years and now is 바카라사이트 time to explore o바카라사이트r options. If 바카라사이트 forthcoming review of university funding by Lord Browne just lists ways to squeeze more money out of students and 바카라사이트ir families, 바카라사이트n it will have spectacularly failed its remit.”

She urged Lord Browne and 바카라사이트 government to consider “taxing big business for 바카라사이트 substantial benefits it gains from a plentiful supply of graduates, and using that money to expand, ra바카라사이트r than reduce, opportunity to study”.

The figures used in 바카라사이트 UCU analysis were taken from 바카라사이트 recent OECD publication Education at a Glance 2010.
