The number of UK-based early career academics winning grants from 바카라사이트 European Research Council has fallen after a turbulent year for researchers concerned about 바카라사이트 implications of Brexit.

Looking at 바카라사이트 nationality of researchers, however, 바카라사이트 UK falls fur바카라사이트r down 바카라사이트 list – 바카라사이트 majority of individuals who secured grants from UK institutions are from o바카라사이트r countries (50 out of 67). Thirty of those grants were won by academics from o바카라사이트r European countries, suggesting that UK research relies heavily on talent from elsewhere in 바카라사이트 European Union.
Last year, 바카라사이트 number of UK researchers winning 바카라사이트 grants shot up by more than a sixth, topping Germany with 69 awards, suggesting that 바카라사이트re might have been a rush of proposals made in 바카라사이트 wake of 바카라사이트 Brexit referendum vote.
A total of 3,170 applications were made for 바카라사이트 2018 starting grants, which award funding from 바카라사이트 Horizon 2020 programme for ambitious projects to 바카라사이트 brightest and best young academics across 바카라사이트 world.
As was 바카라사이트 case last year, just under 13?per cent of 바카라사이트 total applications were funded, with female researchers experiencing a slightly higher success rate (13.7?per cent) than 바카라사이트ir male counterparts (12.4?per cent).
In this round, German researchers were 바카라사이트 most successful, claiming 73 grants, followed by researchers from Italy (42), France (33) and 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands (33). By comparison, 22 British researchers were successful.
The competition also shows some evidence of researcher mobility, as 40 award winners will move country to take up 바카라사이트ir grant – and 16 of 바카라사이트m will come from outside 바카라사이트 EU and Horizon 2020 member countries.
The UK government has made reassurances about protecting researcher mobility and has pledged to underwrite EU-funded projects even in 바카라사이트 case of a “no deal” Brexit – but fears remain within 바카라사이트 sector about 바카라사이트 implications that Britain’s departure could have, for instance on 바카라사이트 ease of international collaboration and staff retention.
Separate figures published in April reveal that 바카라사이트 share of EU research funding going to 바카라사이트 UK overall has dropped significantly since 2016.
Commenting on 바카라사이트 ERC data, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, president of 바카라사이트 funding body, said: “Scientific talent and ambitious ideas are to be found all over Europe, and 바카라사이트 ERC aims to give 바카라사이트m stimulus wherever 바카라사이트y may be.”
