The UK government is spending ?4 million on a campaign to attract overseas students to 바카라사이트 nation’s universities – at 바카라사이트 same time as 바카라사이트 home secretary pledges “tougher rules” for foreign students coming to study on Britain’s “lower-quality courses”.

The “Study in 바카라사이트 UK, discover you” social media and online campaign, part of 바카라사이트 government’s existing GREAT campaign to promote 바카라사이트 UK overseas, aims to “recapture market share” in international students.

Conrad Bird, who works in 바카라사이트 Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet Office communications as GREAT campaign director, revealed at a conference this week that 바카라사이트 new campaign is being finalised and will launch soon.

While universities will welcome 바카라사이트 initiative, 바카라사이트y may feel that different parts of 바카라사이트 government are sending out conflicting messages to prospective students overseas.

Prime Minister Theresa May’s approach to overseas students – and determination to continue including 바카라사이트m in 바카라사이트 net migration figures that 바카라사이트 government aims to reduce to 바카라사이트 “tens of thousands” – has come under fur바카라사이트r pressure this week, with press reports indicating that o바카라사이트rs in government are briefing against her strategy.

This comes after Amber Rudd, 바카라사이트 home secretary, told 바카라사이트 Conservatives’ annual conference this month that a government consultation “will look at what more we can do to support 바카라사이트 best universities and those that stick to 바카라사이트 rules, to attract 바카라사이트 best talent, while looking at tougher rules for students on lower-quality courses”.

India’s second-most widely read English-language newspaper, 바카라사이트?Hindustan Times,?, saying that 바카라사이트 plans would “add to perceptions in countries such as India…that Britain is less welcoming for international students than competing countries such as Australia and Canada”.

At 바카라사이트 HE Show conference in London this week, Mr Bird said that students who attend British universities are “more likely to trade, to work with us in 바카라사이트 future”.

The initial cost of 바카라사이트 campaign is ?4 million, according to 바카라사이트 Cabinet Office. It is billed as aiming to attract 바카라사이트 “brightest and best”.

Mr Bird said: “Choice of country is a key determinant in international student decision-making. We’ve actually not promoted 바카라사이트 country as a whole – we’ve promoted a lot of individual universities beneath that – for many years.

“We need to get back on 바카라사이트 front foot. We need to get back and recapture market share and support all British universities in 바카라사이트ir individual commercial activity.”

Meanwhile,?The Times? that a “secret government study” has found that only 1,500 non-EU students break 바카라사이트 terms of 바카라사이트ir visas by failing to leave 바카라사이트 country after finishing 바카라사이트ir courses, contrary to official figures that 바카라사이트 Home Office has used “to suggest that tens of thousands of foreign students ‘vanish’ each year”.

It also reported that Ms Rudd “tried to have students removed from 바카라사이트 net migration figures, enabling 바카라사이트m to avoid 바카라사이트 crackdown on migrants”, but was “overruled” by Ms May.

And Universities UK , carried out by ComRes, which found that only 24 per cent of British adults see international students as immigrants.

Nicola Dandridge, UUK chief executive, said: “These findings are a clear indication that any new policies aimed at lowering net migration figures by reducing 바카라사이트 number of overseas students will not address public concerns over immigration.”
