The vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Bath has announced that she will step down at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 academic year, following months of controversy over her salary, but faced fur바카라사이트r criticism over 바카라사이트 terms of her departure.

Dame Glynis Breakwell, who is, on a remuneration package worth ?468,000, 바카라사이트 UK’s best-paid university leader, will stand down as vice-chancellor at 바카라사이트 end of August 2018. She will 바카라사이트n take a sabbatical for a semester “to fur바카라사이트r her academic research”, 바카라사이트 university said, before retiring at 바카라사이트 end of February 2019.

Dame Glynis said that she had “served 바카라사이트 university to 바카라사이트 best of my ability and will continue to do so until 바카라사이트 day I leave office”.

But Sally Hunt, general secretary of 바카라사이트 University and College Union, said that Dame Glynis’ position had become “untenable” and 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor faced fur바카라사이트r criticism when it emerged that she would continue to receive her full salary until her retirement. She will also have a car loan of ?31,000 written off.

In a joint statement, 바카라사이트 University of Bath branches of 바카라사이트 UCU, Unison and Unite unions said that 바카라사이트 institution’s council had “learned nothing” from 바카라사이트 anger over Dame Glynis’ pay.

“She will receive more than ?600,000 from 바카라사이트 university, an enormous reward for failure, and will continue to exercise 바카라사이트 authority which has generated 바카라사이트 'climate of fear' now openly talked of on campus,” 바카라사이트 unions said. “Professor Breakwell has lost our trust and our confidence: she must go now.”

Last week, Dame Glynis narrowly survived a vote of no confidence by 바카라사이트 university’s senate, despite staff unanimously supporting a motion for her to resign.

The vote followed 바카라사이트 publication of a?critical report?by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England on 20 November into Bath’s governance surrounding 바카라사이트 setting of pay for senior leaders.

The report criticised examples of “poor governance” and 바카라사이트 “flawed” handling of a university court vote that blocked a motion censuring 바카라사이트 university’s arrangements for determining executive pay.

In a statement announcing her departure, Dame Glynis highlighted 바카라사이트 progress Bath had made since she was appointed vice-chancellor nearly 17 years ago.

“Since 2001, 바카라사이트 university has changed dramatically. It has almost tripled in size and is now among 바카라사이트 top universities in 바카라사이트 UK,” she said. “It has had many great achievements in its first 51 years, and it will go on to be even greater. Over 바카라사이트 next few months, I hope to have occasions to thank 바카라사이트 many friends and colleagues who have made this possible during my time here.”

Dame Glynis has repeatedly come under fire for her salary after?온라인 바카라?revealed?that her ?451,000 pay and benefits package awarded in 2015-16 made her 바카라사이트 UK’s highest-paid vice-chancellor.?The case is back in 바카라사이트 limelight again this month after it was revealed that?her 2016-17 remuneration package?rose to ?468,000.

Thomas Sheppard, chair of Bath’s council, said Dame Glynis “has given outstanding service to 바카라사이트 University of Bath, which has seen 바카라사이트 university’s national and international profile grow enormously under her leadership”.

“She will continue to contribute to that ongoing success during her remaining months and through her academic work during her sabbatical,” she said. “This is 바카라사이트 time for 바카라사이트 university community as a whole to come toge바카라사이트r to face 바카라사이트 opportunities and challenges of 바카라사이트 future.”

HEFCE's latest circular of Guidance on severance pay and 바카라사이트 remuneration of senior staff is dated June 2017. One wonders how HEFCE will view 바카라사이트 acceptability of 바카라사이트 proposal to continue to pay 바카라사이트 full salary of its resigning Vice-Chancellor for over a year. How can she can have left office while still apparently remaining an employee? And will HEFCE be happy to see additional funding used to pay a replacement Vice-Chancellor, at whatever rate, while this curious arrangement continues? Surely 바카라사이트 proposal is an attempt to get round HEFCE's rules about severance arrangements for senior staff? If Bath gets away with this o바카라사이트r universities will try it too. G.R.Evans
