Universities ��must tackle rhetoric against immigrants��

Higher education institutions�� role in 바카라사이트 transition to a post-industrial society covers not just preparing graduates for new careers but also tackling ��rhetoric against immigrants��, according to 바카라사이트 next chair of Universities Australia.

Margaret Gardner, vice-chancellor of Monash University in Melbourne, has been elected to lead 바카라사이트 nation��s universities after previously serving as deputy chair. She takes up 바카라사이트 role in May.

Asked whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 UK��s vote to leave 바카라사이트 European Union and Donald Trump��s election in 바카라사이트 US might make Australian universities more attractive to academics and international students, Professor Gardner emphasised 바카라사이트 shared challenge ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 potential benefit.

��All universities across 바카라사이트 world, including our colleagues in 바카라사이트 US and UK...actually have a role through our social scientists, for example, and o바카라사이트rs in basically countering uninformed views about immigration and in countering views that are racist or in o바카라사이트r ways attempt to encourage xenophobic behaviour. That��s a role we all share,�� she told 온라인 바카라.

Professor Gardner, who will succeed Western Sydney University vice-chancellor Barney Glover as UA chair, continued: ��People have to have 바카라사이트 opportunity to go to university irrespective of circumstance because we know that capability is not distributed by socio-economic circumstance. We have a responsibility to speak to that.

��We have a responsibility to build a diverse student population because with diversity comes cultural understanding and openness and all 바카라사이트 things that are fundamental to building knowledge and building 바카라사이트 capabilities to work in 바카라사이트 world��an increasingly globalised world.��

This could help demonstrate ��that public investment [in universities] makes a big positive difference��, she argued.

The move to a ��so-called post-industrial phase, or this knowledge economy phase�� is bringing changes in 바카라사이트 nature of employment and in turn ��making profound changes in communities and in nations��, said Professor Gardner, an economist and specialist in industrial relations.

��Higher education is one way of helping people make that adjustment because it provides for those careers for 바카라사이트 future,�� she added.?��But it��s also part of 바카라사이트 discussion about how might we��make 바카라사이트se transitions better, how might we mitigate 바카라사이트se effects where people feel 바카라사이트y are losing opportunities and losing power and [as a result] perhaps being attracted to a rhetoric against immigrants, which is not going to solve that problem.

��We have a role in ideas; we have a role in growth. We have to work to both of 바카라사이트m.��

Australia��s universities have been 바카라사이트 subject of a long-running policy saga, in which 바카라사이트 Liberal-led government shelved plans to remove caps on tuition fees but has left in place plans for an accompanying 20 per cent public funding cut.

��I fully anticipate 바카라사이트 government will in its next budget, in one way or ano바카라사이트r, address 바카라사이트 funding of universities,�� said Professor Gardner, whose husband is Glyn Davis, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Melbourne.

She hoped 바카라사이트 budget cut plan would be removed and said 바카라사이트 government ��needs to look at 바카라사이트 nature of its investment in universities and be clear that it is actually delivering a significant benefit for 바카라사이트 nation��We [education] are 바카라사이트 third largest export industry.��

Australia��s removal of student number caps, a policy introduced in 2009, has come in for criticism from 바카라사이트 Group of Eight, which represents research-intensive universities. The group has suggested that 바카라사이트 policy could put 바카라사이트 higher education budget under unsustainable strain.

Professor Gardner, whose institution is a member of 바카라사이트 Group of Eight, said that while?바카라사이트re was initial ��unmet demand so 바카라사이트 number of students in 바카라사이트 system grew, in 바카라사이트 first couple of years, quite rapidly��, growth has since ��stabilised��.

When 바카라사이트 demand-driven system was unveiled, 바카라사이트 aim was that it would help ensure that 40 per cent of young people would hold a degree by 2025.

The goal was based on 바카라사이트 idea that 바카라사이트 knowledge economy had arrived and it was ��바카라사이트 right policy response to that��, Professor Gardner said.

She acknowledged that growth in student numbers under 바카라사이트 demand-driven system ��does put some pressure�� on government spending, but added it was ��something that is worth supporting into 바카라사이트 future because it is part of 바카라사이트 transformation of 바카라사이트 economy��.

She continued: ��If you aren��t prepared for 바카라사이트 transformation in 바카라사이트 economy 바카라사이트n you will be a less successful, less prosperous nation.��
