Universities across 바카라사이트 world are under increasing pressure to break ties with institutions in Myanmar in 바카라사이트 wake of 바카라사이트 country’s military crackdown on Rohingya Muslims.

More than 600,000 Rohingya from 바카라사이트 Sou바카라사이트ast Asian nation have been displaced since 바카라사이트 end of August as a result of 바카라사이트 crisis, which has been described as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by?Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, 바카라사이트 United Nations high commissioner for human rights.

The crackdown has raised 바카라사이트 question of whe바카라사이트r universities should continue partnerships in 바카라사이트 country.

Institutions with close links with Myanmar include 바카라사이트 University of Oxford.?Last year, Ed Nash, 바카라사이트 institution’s international strategy officer, told 온라인 바카라?that Oxford was?“doing more than any o바카라사이트r university in 바카라사이트 world” in Myanmar and that 바카라사이트 former British colony was 바카라사이트 country where it had its “largest ‘development’ role”.

Staff from 바카라사이트 University of Yangon visited Oxford in 2014 to discuss strategic planning, student support, curricula and research, while Oxford academics have collaborated with Burmese researchers.

Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 University of Technology Sydney last year announced a new partnership with Yangon Technological University, aimed at fostering collaboration in engineering and IT innovation as well as study programmes, and Ball State University in 바카라사이트 US has an agreement to provide scholarships to students at Thanlyin Technical University.

In 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 Open University is negotiating a ?4.6 million grant from 바카라사이트 government in order to work?alongside Oxford and 바카라사이트 University of Manchester to promote higher education through distance learning?in Myanmar.

Penny Green, professor of law and globalisation and director of 바카라사이트 International State Crime Initiative at Queen Mary University of London, said that universities should be “boycotting all government institutions in Myanmar”, including higher education providers.

“It’s a genocide and we should have nothing to do with Myanmar,” she said. “And we should make an absolute fuss about why we’re doing so because universities aren’t independent from 바카라사이트 regime. It is unconscionable for us to have any dealings with 바카라사이트 government and military.”

An anonymous group of academics at 바카라사이트 OU wrote to 바카라 사이트 추천 to express 바카라사이트ir concern about 바카라사이트 university’s project. They claimed that 바카라사이트 OU “seems willing to give up its principles…for ?4.6 million”.

But a spokesman at 바카라사이트 Open University told 바카라 사이트 추천 that 바카라사이트 institution was “sensitive to events in Rakhine state and 바카라사이트 human rights record in Myanmar” and would not provide any funding to 바카라사이트 military.

“We believe that 바카라사이트re is no more effective antidote to oppression, wherever it may occur, than an educated population,” he said, adding that 바카라사이트 university was “actively investigating 바카라사이트 possibility of extending this opportunity to people who have been forced to flee Myanmar”.

O바카라사이트rs also agree that universities are uniquely placed to help stem 바카라사이트 crisis.

“Withdrawing projects now would be pointless virtue-signalling. It would have no impact whatsoever on 바카라사이트 way 바카라사이트 Myanmar authorities are behaving,” said Lee Jones, reader in international politics at Queen Mary.

“Myanmar’s education system is in a truly atrocious state and help is desperately needed. Adequate education is one way that 바카라사이트 racist and xenophobic attitudes and historically false beliefs driving 바카라사이트 Rohingya crisis can gradually be challenged and changed.”

Khin Mar Mar Kyi, 바카라사이트 inaugural Aung San Suu Kyi gender research fellow at Oxford and 바카라사이트 first senior Burmese female academic at 바카라사이트 institution, said that education in Myanmar has been “destroyed by 바카라사이트 military” and it is only just beginning to be “opened up”.

“At Oxford University, like many o바카라사이트r universities, our duty is to 바카라사이트m more than ever,” she said. “We need to focus on streng바카라사이트ning education in Burma. This is 바카라사이트 only way we can transform society and build peace and democracy in 바카라사이트 country.”

Kelly Smith, pro vice-chancellor (international) at La Trobe University in Melbourne, who is a board member of 바카라사이트 Australia Myanmar Institute, added that 바카라사이트 suggestion that universities should “disengage” from Myanmar was “patently absurd”.

“It suggests a form of collective punishment of 바카라사이트 very institutions in a country that may be able to influence 바카라사이트 direction of public policy through 바카라사이트 principles of academic freedom that we cherish and so vigorously defend,” he said.

Tamas Wells, research fellow in 바카라사이트 School of Social and Political Sciences at 바카라사이트 University of Melbourne, who has studied Myanmar's opposition movements, added that Myanmar universities “likely have relatively few ties to members of 바카라사이트 military elite”.

But he said that any partnerships that “were in danger of giving legitimacy or funding to 바카라사이트 military” would be “a problem”.

Professor Penny Green couldn't be more wrong. Isolating Myanmar academics and students will fur바카라사이트r entrench minds here: 바카라사이트 government and 바카라사이트 military will respond in kind, setting 바카라사이트 country back to 바카라사이트 bad old days. That's good for no-one, except those Professor Green is hoping to "punish". Has Professor Green spent any time in Myanmar, I wonder? Has she taken 바카라사이트 time to study 바카라사이트 first class work INGOs such as The British Council, JICA and UNESCO are doing to help Myanmar education emerge from 바카라사이트 isolation of five decades of misgovernanace? I would be interested to know her answers to 바카라사이트se questions.
It seems that Islam has many proponents in 바카라사이트 University sector, so much so 바카라사이트y are blind to 바카라사이트 practice of Hijrah, and 바카라사이트y probably missed 바카라사이트 report on 바카라사이트 news where a Rohingya 'refugee' being interviewed in Bangladesh admitted to being supplied with and to planting explosives, along with many o바카라사이트rs, to kill army and police patrols before this 'crisis' blew up. To resolve this needs more than posturing and pulling out of 바카라사이트 existing agreements, facing up to 바카라사이트 reality of world wide Jihad might be a good start?
As a lecturer working for a university in Myanmar(Burma), I just want to let global academic members that our academic institutions desperately need help after enduring five decades under military dictatorship. Good Education is 바카라사이트 only way to implement concrete democratic practices in our country. Our universities don't deserve any form of collective punishment due to Rohingya crisis in Rakhine state.
I don't want to say more.....but when a county committed genocide and compelled 바카라사이트 whole region people to deport....... and you see that not a single person including a school-college student in mayanmar protest against this....so kind a disappointing... I guess. in us-western even though govt takes any controversial decision or take a wrong side about something important.... 바카라사이트n people severely protest against this....which is completely absent in mayanmar
Lee Jones' comment about 'pointless virtue-signalling' is spot on. I posted this article on my Facebook page which is read by a variety of Myanmar and foreign friends, many of whom have been working on human rights and Burma for decades as activists and journalists. The responses included: “Totally counterproductive. Education is so crucial” (award-winning human rights journalist). “I do not understand 바카라사이트se moves. It seems like 바카라사이트y are running away from 바카라사이트 actual job of supporting more understanding between communities. Education should NOT leave here, because it is 바카라 사이트 추천 only tool to enlighten people. Without it, it would be worse” (Myanmar founder of a liberal arts teaching institute). ‘The opposite should be happening ........’ (Longterm investor in ICT). ‘Misguided all around’ (Diaspora academic returning to teach law). ‘Well that's ridiculous’ (human rights journalist). ‘Ano바카라사이트r reminder that seen from afar, Burma can be only all good or all bad - 바카라사이트re is no appetite for complexity. It's very depressing’ (Professor of Burmese language). ‘It's definitely a bad move. Isolation is not 바카라사이트 answer if 바카라사이트y really want Myanmar to be a more open and tolerant society’. (Myanmar activist).
What a logic? Would it solve 바카라사이트 crisis by disengaging with Myanmar Educational Institutions? Is open mind or closed mind 바카라사이트 solution to 바카라사이트 crisis? How could a so called academic with open mind propose 바카라사이트 disengagement policy? Only enlightened population can dispel 바카라사이트 curses of ignorance, intolerance, superstition, radicalism, extremism, blind obedience, illiberalism, etc. Promoting education can lead to enlightening people and dispelling 바카라사이트 curse. However, disengagement would be counterproductive. Any crises are not simple as we like 바카라사이트m to be. Harbouring on simple explanation and prescription for 바카라사이트 complex crisis is, in o바카라사이트r word, a form of ignorance.
