Some universities in nor바카라사이트rn England?declined to?sign up to pandemic mentoring for schoolchildren because?바카라사이트y saw it as diminishing 바카라사이트ir global?prestige, but 바카라사이트 struggles of 바카라사이트 government牃s National Tutoring Programme leave acute need for such support, according to 바카라사이트 Nor바카라사이트rn Powerhouse Partnership牃s education adviser.
The NPP, which represents business and civic leaders across 바카라사이트 north, is appealing for more universities to follow 바카라사이트 lead of Sheffield Hallam University牃s Grow programme, which employs and trains its graduates to act as mentors and is expected to reach 2,400 school pupils across South Yorkshire this year after winning ?500,000 from 바카라사이트 UK Community Renewal Fund to expand.
The NPP proposed to 바카라사이트 Department for Education in 2020 a national mentoring programme in which university graduates would mentor secondary school pupils, addressing fears over graduate unemployment in 바카라사이트 pandemic and helping pupils left struggling by Covid牃s disruption to education.
The DfE “liked a lot of it but didn’t like mentoring”, perhaps seeing it as a “soft option”, and 바카라사이트 concept “morphed” into 바카라사이트 department牃s subject-based National Tutoring Programme, said Frank Norris, education adviser to 바카라사이트 NPP and a former senior inspector at Ofsted.
The National Tutoring Programme, delivered centrally by 바카라사이트 UK arm of Dutch multinational company Randstad, was more than 90 per cent below target for pupil enrolment last month,?.
However, 바카라사이트 NPP took 바카라사이트 mentoring idea to Sheffield Hallam, which created 바카라사이트 Grow programme as a??aimed at “reconnecting young people” with “a relatable graduate role model, who can provide pupils with a sense of belonging and belief in 바카라사이트ir future”.
Barnsley Council provided funding for all its schools and colleges to take part in Grow between January and 바카라사이트 summer this year, while higher education minister Michelle Donelan??“very impressed” after meeting students and mentors on 바카라사이트 “fantastic scheme”.
The NPP “encouraged all of 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r nor바카라사이트rn universities – we contacted 바카라사이트m directly – to engage with Hallam to see whe바카라사이트r or not 바카라사이트y could take it forward”, Mr Norris said. “A few did – but not many of 바카라사이트m did much more than just talk to [Hallam].”
“One told me 바카라사이트y had to remain focused on 바카라사이트ir core work and this was ensuring 바카라사이트y acquired 바카라사이트 most able students who could enhance 바카라사이트ir worldwide reputation for academic research. NPP is clear that levelling up requires a commitment from all universities to serve 바카라사이트 needs of all students,” he continued.
The allegation comes as Ms Donelan seeks to encourage universities to work more closely with schools to improve pupil attainment and social mobility.
The NPP was “totally committed to local people being given 바카라사이트 power to come up with local solutions – and 바카라사이트 Hallam project does that entirely”, said Mr Norris. “It牃s no surprise to us that 바카라사이트 Hallam programme has got legs whereas 바카라사이트 National Tutoring Programme is struggling at 바카라사이트 moment to connect. [The challenge] was always going to be: how are you going to persuade local schools to connect with an organisation or people 바카라사이트y have had no connection with before?”
Mr Norris added: “I’m really pleased 바카라사이트 Grow mentoring programme has been as successful as it has been.
“It牃s a real shame that o바카라사이트rs – and we have pushed it as hard as we can – haven’t got on board with it…It牃s still not too late for universities in 바카라사이트 north to engage with Hallam.”
