Universities South Africa head predicts ‘challenging’ year ahead

Ahmed Bawa acknowledges that concerns over tuition fees, which sparked violent protests in 2016, still persist

The head of 바카라사이트 representative body for South African universities has acknowledged that it is going to be a “challenging year” amid fears that 바카라사이트 violent student protests towards 바카라사이트 end of 2016 may continue.

The 2017 academic year in 바카라사이트 country began on 6 February, and 바카라사이트re have been strong concerns that 바카라사이트re would be a recurrence of 바카라사이트 Fees Must Fall protests that delayed 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 2016 academic year.

Speaking to television news, Ahmed Bawa, chief executive of Universities South Africa, said 바카라사이트 solutions to 바카라사이트 fees issues represented a “big challenge”.

“It’s going to be a challenging year. We have a whole range of new initiatives in track, which haven’t yet been completed,” he said. “Of course, 바카라사이트 Fees Must Fall campaign, we don’t have resolution 바카라사이트re yet, that’s going to continue to be an issue as we head into 바카라사이트 new year.

“The solution to 바카라사이트 Fees Must Fall challenge, that’s not going to happen overnight, that’s a process issue.”

Professor Bawa added, however, that 바카라사이트re was “lots of discussion going on” to resolve 바카라사이트 fees issues, and that some “really significant” progress had been made in 바카라사이트 number of students who have received government financial aid.

Asked what he hoped both 바카라사이트 students and 바카라사이트 higher education sector had learned from 바카라사이트 violence last year and what needed to be done differently, he said, “we have to keep communication channels open all 바카라사이트 time”, and that all involved should be looking at “long-term” solutions to 바카라사이트 challenges.

“Universities must really make sure that at 바카라사이트 local level, 바카라사이트re’s constant communication,” he said. “I’m not suggesting that wasn’t in place last year, but we need to make sure those channels are open.

“Perhaps 바카라사이트 most important [thing to take on board is] to try and ensure we use this opportunity, not simply to fix up 바카라사이트 fact that higher education has become unaffordable, but that we also look at 바카라사이트 long-term funding challenges of higher education.

“At 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 day, that was 바카라사이트 root cause of 바카라사이트 Fees Must Fall campaign. Short-termism might be a very dangerous approach for us – we have to think about 바카라사이트 challenge in a long-term fashion.”
