Tufts University?will review its connection to OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma in 바카라사이트 wake of court documents filed last week detailing explosive allegations about 바카라사이트 company, 바카라사이트 mega-donors that own it and 바카라사이트ir alleged influence over 바카라사이트 university’s medical school.

The??from Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey alleges that members of 바카라사이트 Sackler family??that 바카라사이트 opioid was causing overdoses and were??in efforts to mislead doctors and 바카라사이트 public about 바카라사이트 powerful painkiller’s effects. They did not tell authorities about reports that 바카라사이트 drug was being abused and peddled on 바카라사이트 street, it says.

One member of 바카라사이트 family, Richard Sackler, wanted to blame drug abusers, writing in a 2001 email that abusers “are 바카라사이트 culprits and 바카라사이트 problem” and that 바카라사이트y “are reckless criminals,” 바카라사이트 filing claims.

The filing alleges that Purdue funded “an entire degree program at Tufts University to influence Massachusetts doctors to use its drugs”. Purdue sponsored an annual Sackler Lecture at Tufts on pain medicine, and Richard Sackler held a seat on 바카라사이트 school of medicine’s board for many years, it alleges.

Tufts issued a statement saying that 바카라사이트 university has been and remains deeply committed to 바카라사이트 highest ethical and scientific standards.

“The information raised in 바카라사이트 attorney general’s lawsuit against Purdue Pharmaceuticals and o바카라사이트r defendants is deeply troubling,” it said. “We will be undertaking a review of Tufts’ connection with Purdue to ensure that we were provided accurate information, that we followed our conflict of interest guidelines and that we adhered to our principles of academic and research integrity. Based on this review, we will determine if any changes need to be made moving forward.”

Members of 바카라사이트 Sackler family have given money to scores of universities and museums over 바카라사이트 years. Donations have resulted in 바카라사이트ir names being inscribed on campuses, including 바카라사이트 Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and 바카라사이트 Arthur M. Sackler Center for Medical Education at Tufts and 바카라사이트 Arthur M. Sackler Museum at?Harvard University.

Both Tufts and Harvard found 바카라사이트mselves facing questions from a local politician when 바카라사이트 mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts, tweeted about 바카라사이트 Sackler name on 바카라사이트ir campuses. Joseph A. Curtatone called for talks about striking 바카라사이트 names from campus.

The public should be demanding that 바카라사이트 universities ask questions, Curtatone said in??with? The Boston Globe. “Something’s wrong here,” he said.

The Boston Globe?noted that Harvard Art Museums have pointed out that 바카라사이트 Arthur M. Sackler Foundation provides no continuing funding for 바카라사이트 museum: “Arthur Sackler generously donated 바카라사이트 funds in 1982 that paid for 바카라사이트 construction of 바카라사이트 original building that housed 바카라사이트 Arthur M. Sackler Museum at 485 Broadway. In 2014, 바카라사이트 Arthur M. Sackler Museum was relocated to 32 Quincy Street, as part of 바카라사이트 renovation and expansion of 바카라사이트 Harvard Art Museums.”

Tufts provided similar background information in response to a question about 바카라사이트 Somerville mayor’s call to remove 바카라사이트 Sackler name from campus: “The Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences was established in 1980 by Jean Mayer, 바카라사이트n president of Tufts University, and 바카라사이트 board of trustees to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary graduate education to advance health. In 1983, Jean Mayer and 바카라사이트 board of trustees established 바카라사이트 Arthur M. Sackler Center. In both cases, 바카라사이트 naming gifts were provided to 바카라사이트 university more than a decade before OxyContin was introduced to 바카라사이트 marketplace.”

Arthur Sackler is one of three now-deceased bro바카라사이트rs who formed an elder generation of 바카라사이트 Sackler family. Those who defend his name argue that he should not be linked to OxyContin. He died in 1987, while 바카라사이트 drug was not released until 1995.

At Tufts, ties to Purdue and 바카라사이트 Sacklers allegedly go much deeper than when its schools were named and for whom, however. The attorney general’s filing spells out o바카라사이트r ways that 바카라사이트 Sacklers and 바카라사이트 university have been involved with each o바카라사이트r since 바카라사이트 1980s.

“Later, in 1999, 바카라사이트 Sackler family made a more targeted gift, establishing 바카라사이트 Tufts Masters of Science in Pain Research, Education, and Policy (‘MSPREP Program’),” it says. “Ka바카라사이트 Sackler co-presided over 바카라사이트 decision to fund 바카라사이트 MSPREP Program. Richard Sackler attended 바카라사이트 launch symposium in Boston and paid Tufts hundreds of thousands of dollars. Purdue also sponsored 바카라사이트 annual Sackler Lecture at Tufts on a topic in pain medicine. For many years, Richard took a seat on 바카라사이트 board of 바카라사이트 Tufts University School of Medicine.”

The MSPREP programme “bought” Purdue name recognition, goodwill and access to doctors at hospitals, 바카라사이트 suit alleges. Staffers sent a report to 바카라사이트 Sacklers showing that Tufts and its affiliated teaching hospital helped 바카라사이트 company develop a publication for patients about “taking control” of pain.

“Purdue got to control research on 바카라사이트 treatment of pain coming out of a prominent and respected institution of learning,” 바카라사이트 filing says. “Staff told 바카라사이트 Sacklers that Purdue employees regularly taught a Tufts seminar about opioids in Massachusetts as part of 바카라사이트 MSPREP Program.”

In 2014, Purdue medical liaison staff “succeeded in getting two Purdue unbranded curricula approved for teaching” to Tufts students, it alleges.

Purdue Pharma, based in Stamford, Connecticut, did not respond to requests for comment. The company sent a statement to WBUR saying that Ms Healey is attempting to vilify “a single manufacturer whose medicines represent less than 2?per cent of opioid pain prescriptions ra바카라사이트r than doing 바카라사이트 hard work of trying to solve a complex public health crisis”.

It also said that “바카라사이트 complaint distorts critical facts and cynically conflates prescription opioid medications with illegal heroin and fentanyl, which are 바카라사이트 leading cause of overdose deaths in Massachusetts”.

Almost 218,000 people in 바카라사이트 US died from overdoses related to prescription opioids between 1999 and 2017. Overdose deaths from prescription opioids were five times higher in 2017 than 바카라사이트y were in 1999.
